3x5s Friday! Mini Gesture #4

QUICK couple minute double page spread mini figurative gesture study #4!

When the figure is partially obscured by fabric or supportive structure, it helps to find the anatomical markers of bony and fleshy landmarks in order to not get lost or disoriented in the construction process.

Here I relied on identifying the greater trochanter (protruding head of the upper leg bone, the femur, that creates a bump at the "hips", the widest point of the pelvis-leg joint), the angle of the thorax (rib cage), the angles of the legs and the visible knee area, and the wrist bones (radius and ulna) lining up the rest of the arm, in a light, loose, gestural way.

From there, I found the relationship of the shapes from these structures, and found the corresponding contour last. I don't like full contour all over the figure, I like to pay attention to line weight variation to imply depth and tension in the pose. If everything is handled with the same mark-making, it flattens out.

I use a combination of the rectangular Carpenter style Generals Pencil in 2 or 4B, and a Palomino Blackwing Pearl, depending on my mood.

Have you experimented with line weight variation in your figure studies? Have you noticed starting light and gestural acts like a guiding foundation that you can build on top of more confidently?
