[Hereafter] Chapter XXXIV: The Passing Days

A little bit longer to write for a chapter that is a little bit longer than usual.

So, we finally address the elephant in the room. Kind of. Sort of. It just didn't make sense to me for Taylor to spill her guts about her past without reservation, and it feels a little too early in the story (35 chapters in, haha) for her to reveal that much about herself. Well, I suppose it would have been a bit like Dumbledore telling Harry about the Horcruxes at the end of Chamber of Secrets, wouldn't it?

One more chapter and then we start Septem for real. I have a few fun things planned right from the start for that.

EDIT: Down the rest of the way.

Ah, I see, It's like deliberately going up a trapeze without a safety net and having everyone freak out over it. Thanks for the clarification!

That's all true, and as comes up briefly in a later chapter, the job of being a Master is so dangerous, they're all getting hazard pay for the duration they spend inside each Singularity - measured by the Singularity's local time, rather than Chaldea's. But there are failsafes in place that are tripped if the chances of successful Rayshift drop below 95%. For the twins, at least. Without being able to read that "unknown data volume," Taylor is taking extra risks, because neither Da Vinci nor Romani is sure that those failsafes will trip if something goes wrong. As far as they know, she may as well be making each Rayshift without those failsafes, and that puts her in extra danger. Of course, we know from a Doylist perspective that she'll be fine. But the characters don't.

A bit late for a comment (but I only just got on board!) but I also think this was a very good transitory chapter. Although I don't quite understand why Da Vinci and Romany are so terribly worried about Taylor. Sure, she could die and she really looks like she's having a panic attack every time she rayshifts or uses the simulator, but well, isn't "risk of death" part and parcel of the master of chaldea package? I'm not terribly knowledgeable about Fate (I just really like James' take on Taylor) but it seems to me that everyone is plenty aware of what they're signing up for. Hell, that's the interesting bit about the twins' character development, that they really DIDN'T sign up for something quite this extreme. They're only there because some bastard detonated a bomb inside Chaldea and killed literally everyone else who could be there :P

Pretty awesome chapter, honestly! P.S. After the last couple of chapters, I was kind of thinking the same thing. It doesn’t really make sense for her to spill the beans at this point.
