The world has long since gone to hell.
The farms that make our food and the cities we live in are the only safe places left. The only places with any guarantee that you'll wake up to see the sun rise. Everywhere else is cruel and unforgiving, beset upon by bandits and outlaws, and unprotected from the plague that strikes erratically and consumes everything in its path.
Even the cities aren't free from danger. Heroes and villains fight in the streets, using their supernatural powers in the dead of night. Pharos stands guard on the walls day in and day out, watching. Waiting. Dreading the day it's our turn.
We all try to live, pretending it's okay. Getting on with our lives, like tomorrow won't be the last. Fighting, with mediocrity and paper thin hope, the final gasp of our dying world.
When all that matters is who you are in the dark, when the only way to get up in the morning is to try and fight the end, when giving up is the same as death... Wouldn't you want to be a hero, too?
