"Pulling a GOT7" Interesting. It must have been quite the legal feat. I'm sure that musical industry contracts are quite extensive and detailed, especially at big companies like JYPE. Also interesting that while GOT7 left for lack of artistic autonomy, that seems to be what JYPE is pushing artists toward instead of away from. Wonder if there was a big teaching moment there.

2025-01-29 21:27:57 +0000 UTCGOT7 were SKZ's big brother group when they were still under JYPE. The split from the company is probably one of the more publicly documented ones in that the leader, JayB, paused his own career to study contract/corporate law in order to fight for GOT7's intellectual property, licensing, name, socials, etc. They were able to win the rights to all their names (individual and as a team), including the predebut JJ Project (two of the members were in a unit group before GOT7) as well as their entire discography. There are very few groups who have ever been able to do that (when Brave Girls left their company, they had to completely rebrand to BB Girls - when Beast left their company, they had to rebrand to Highlight). Recently, The Boyz left their company and got to keep their name and catalogue, which is now called in the industry, "pulling a GOT7". Part of the reason for the split was because of the lack of artistic autonomy that was not being allowed by JYPE. Many of the members are also songwriters (this album has all 7 writing on different songs). Stylistically, they fall much more into the 2nd gen/3rd gen boygroups who really leaned in to the "boyfriend/bad boy" concept, however, they were early on known as the acrobatic kpop group because they were so stunt heavy in their performances. But just as SKZ are generally more energetic and aggressive, there is still diversity in the discography. They also all have solo work as musicians and actors - Jinyoung has become a very popular k-actor in recent years and Jackson is heavily involved in conceptual music projects and fashion.

2025-01-29 18:54:10 +0000 UTCI have listened to a few Got7 songs, knowing my own bias is very close to Bambam and I like Jackson, I really wanted to like this group....but so far I found it hard to really get into their music. Maybe I listened to the wrong songs. No idea. But this is the first one I actually kinda like. Listened to it a few times now. It's very catchy.
