For me, this is all about just awesome cartooning. These character designs are so broad and so unique and so expressive. It's just completely unapologetic cartooning that feels equal parts impressionistic and expressionistic. So many cartoonists of both the past and present (myself included) tend to get bogged down by trying to draw more and more realistically, when designs like these can be so much more visually interesting and communicative. "Devilman" on the whole is pretty broad in that sense; much of the drawing lacks refinement but makes up for it in raw energy and emotion.
