Psu: I hope we upload the full res version of this so our patrons can see all the fun crowd characters.
Gunwild: There are accounts in various fencing manuals from the renaissance and earlier that explain the tactic of "ending him rightly" by unscrewing the heavy pommel of your sword and chucking it at the opponent. Psu actually kinda wanted to include that, but I thought this seemed a little more plausible.
Psu: Well I proposed the idea and I think you laughed at it! I think I have to blame youtube channel Skallagrim for introducing the concept. It’s fun to listen to people talk about sword theory and practice and stuff. Especially when it comes to dismantling your sword in the middle of a fight and lobbing a piece of it at your enemy. Anyway, just a minute to talk about the composition here cause I’m happy with it. The first four panels are cropped so close that you can’t exactly tell what happened until we zoom out and see the two of them in center focus. The curve of the panel borders acting like spotlights on the stage.
Gunwild: In real life the scoring system is very much dependent upon what kind of swordfighting is going on. Like, sabres score with a cut, foils with a poke, and so on. In a mixed competition like this you kinda have to make up your own rules, so it's sort of convenient that a tiny baby boop with the wrong end of the sword had us pause, but didn't count for a score.
Psu: I know our comments section wigged out a little there. I think they should take up issue with the judges at this particular event.
Gunwild: Yeah, if they're unfair, that's on them, not us! Although I know that arguing what does and doesn't count as a valid point in combat sports is more popular than ever thanks to Cobra Kai.
Psu: If fighters just got to make their own scoring rules well... actually that might make me inclined to watch it more. Is there a place in Cassiopeia Quinn universe where I can sate my thirst for referee-free violence?
Gunwild: I assume in the space-future, there is a professional Calvinball league.
Psu: Why do I have this feeling Motor Minx is really good at it...
