Page Commentary No. 15
Added 2016-12-30 08:01:43 +0000 UTCPsu: I really like how this page came out, it's one of the ones that still holds up to the current style.
Gunwild: I recall specifically that the first alien world we get a wide shot of was an important idea, I felt like. I thought it should be convincing. So I took inspiration from the quote in the alt-text, which is actually from the very first episode of Doctor Who.
Gunwild: So, you did a really good job making it look like a cool tropical hangout, which is its story purpose, but the multi-winged birds I insisted on are the touch that make it for me. And I almost never give myself credit for an art decision, but I really like that one.
Gunwild: I will also take credit for insisting that Cupcake be in her undies.
Psu: I like drawing landscapes and trees and rocks. I don't get to do that too often in Cassiopeia. People in undies however, we work at making those moments reasonable but plentiful. I don't know whose idea the coconuts were though.
Psu: This was also the first time I tried to start making Theira taller than the rest. But it's a fact I keep forgetting whenever I draw her, unless it's drawing her next to Kettering.
Psu: I don't recall if this page was at all in the very first draft of the comic. I feel like we should address the very first draft of the comic too.
Gunwild: This page was added when Maddy became more of a character, and it was a good chance to give everybody more characterization. Russ is rules-y, Cupcake is nice, Maddy wants get-back.
Gunwild: I don't remember where along the line we decided this should be put in, but it was a good choice. We've already talked about adding her as the second protagonist, though, so, no need to go over that again.
Psu: I like the shadows on the page. And you can see I started switching to serious inks. The lighting also came out swell. It was the first page in the story not in deep space or in a space shi pso it offered more naturalistic lighting
Gunwild: Plus it was important to show that Maddy is determined to be a gloomster.
Psu: She's gotta get her revenge at some point.
Gunwild: I dunno, vengeance is pretty good, too.
