Once the TV series no longer had the novels to draw from for their story line, it became inevitable that the story would veer off along an arc matching the TV story-writing sensibilities of Benioff & Weiss -- less interior plotting and more flashy battles and special effects. GRRM, having switched roles from supreme author to script consultant, really lost control of the story, I think. Once the show-runners ran out of money (ratings, ideas, etc) it was a sure thing they were going to wrap it up and move on. The only way this situation will be redeemed is for GRRM to finish the eff'in story! (haha) Then if the book fans don't like the competed saga in written form, they know who to blame.
