The Lasso Tool is also called Free Hand Selection Tool, because you draw in the selections by hand. Based on the purpose there are the free, polygonal and magnetic mode. Each with it's upsides and downsides. Another very important thing to understand is Anti Aliasing that will help you get very smooth selections - or turn it off for pixel perfect selections. Your choice. :)
