BUG Match: Guns of James Bond

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/headstamp/licensed-troubleshooter?ref=2al11o

Licensed Troubleshooter: The Guns of James Bond is live on Kickstarter now - check it out for lots of super cool exclusive options!

Today my friend Tom joins me at the BackUp Gun (BUG) Match for a bunch of James Bond guns. We tried a new match division this month called Wildcard, where you use a different division of gun (Revolver, Hideout, Backup, and Big 5) in each stage. Tom and I realized that between literary and cinematic Bond we can cover 4 really cool Bond pistol this way - a (faux) Fitz Special, Beretta 418, PPK/S, and ASP. Should be fun! Let's see how we can handle each of them in turn...

What is the brand/tailor of the suit that Agent Double-0 Ian is wearing? He mentioned in the video, but I didn’t have pen and paper near me when he said.

for a more modern touch when I think bond I think HK P7/8. but the pp is still what? 19..28? so like about 45-50years ahead of its time? DA/SA decocker that is like 80s standard. man you did well with that fitz special didn't you. suits. in southern az. that is some sort of masochism. sean would have worn a shortsleeve outside the pants, I assume.

Guido Schriewer

Nope, that's a deliberate part of the tailoring; an elastic gap in the shoulders to allow full range of motion in a fitted jacket.

Forgotten Weapons

I used to have a model 99. It shot really well, but I couldn’t manage the recoil of .40 S&W, and it was also pretty large and hard to conceal compared with a snubbed revolver or a .380 automatic.

David T Klein

Also, consider this a vote for more videos of Double-0 Ian in a three piece suit and ponytail. He wears it well.

I’ll agree their post-competition assessment. My daily carry is a Walther PPK, with a PP barrel and an adapter, to take a Gemtech Aurora sound suppressor. It fits my small hands, it’s comfortable to shoot, it has that heavy, subsonic .380 bullet, it’s easy to reload. My only complaint is that according to ATF, I cannot make new wipes for the sound suppressor in advance. I have to make them one-for-one when I take the suppressor apart to throw away the used up wipes. Honestly, I’d like to keep a spare set of wipes and some Vaseline in a baggy to repack the suppressor when I’m away from my workshop, but I’m not about to commit a felony for contraband under the NFA.

David T Klein

Did you rip the sleeve on your suit? if so, than that's a James Bond fail! :) Please do a video and BUG match with a Colt New Service Fitz Special in .45 Colt!

Even better for recoil control. For Boothroyd's take on a "Fitzed" Smith M&P, see p. 322 of "The Handgun," Bonanza Books, 1970--or the book jacket of "From Russia With Love." It's a long action .38 Special converted to ".380" (probably .38-200) with a 2 3/4" barrel, target sights and surprisingly, an intact hammer spur. Guessing an image of this one will show up in the book.

ViejoLobo

No, it's a heavy steel Model 10-5.

Forgotten Weapons

Is that Fitz an Airweight K frame Smith? If so, I'd love to see that one close up--interested to see whether the front guard cut was able to avoid the bolt stop recess. Airweight Ks, in my experience, have a short, moderately heavy but smooth DA trigger and shoot to point of aim. Much more manageable than the 5 shot Airweight Centennial. If Smith reissued them as +P guns, I'd buy three. From where I sit this was the best of the four guns fired--the Beretta, despite its shootability coming in dead last because of the repeated malfunctions. And I have plenty of trigger time behind the PP and PPK/S in .22, .32 and .380. Now if you substituted a 3913/4 for the ASP, you both would have scored substantially better...

ViejoLobo

I have a P99 next weekend ;)

Forgotten Weapons

In Dr. No, the gun is an FN 1910...the FN 1903 is used in one of Deaver's continuation novels.

Forgotten Weapons

It is remarkable how often the films get this sort of thing wrong - Bond uses both 7.65 and 9mm Walthers in various places (and we discuss this in the book).

Forgotten Weapons

I think you cheated. You said the PPK was in .380 (9mm short); in the book it was in 7.65mm.

Terry

Re: ASP, If you have never shot one, the guttersnipe site SUCKS! Otherwise, they are pretty cool to look at. RE: Bond's FN 1903 - Bond used it in the movie Dr. No. Check the scene where he shoots the bad guy in the girl's apartment with a silenced FN. Same scene where he tells the guy (who is shooting a 1911), that he has had his six and that is all for a S&W.

I usually enjoy the bug match videos the best of all shooting videos and today was no exception. A nice spread of guns though most of them are literary ones. Being a fan of Tomorrow Never Dies, mostly because it was one of the first ones I saw as a kid, I wonder how the Walther P99 stacks up.
