What's the Deal with the SIG P320 Exploding and Firing "Un-Commanded"? (ad-free)
Added 2023-04-20 12:00:04 +0000 UTCSocial media is very excited these days about "exploding" SIG 320s...so let's consider what might actually be happening.
Of course, this discussion is invariably clouded by the fact that the P320 did have a legitimate drop-safety problem a few years ago. It was fixed, but many people don't bother to distinguish between that issue and other alleged malfunctions. So are SIGs really exploding right and left, or is this a case of social media attention making a typical number of incidents with a variety of causes look like a huge trend?

you do not own any 220series? kind of like the old 225 220 in 45 or the 226. early x5 was my 1st handgun in 40. that WAS NOT perfect. alas.

2023-04-20 15:38:17 +0000 UTCI have an early commercial P320. I never had a problem with it, but my gunsmith sent it off an had the upgrade done. His argument was safety first.

2023-04-20 15:31:54 +0000 UTCMany times, you have discussed that development of new designs can take many years to get right, then more years yield further improvements. I don't know the development timeline for the P320, but it does appear to be a redesign of the P250, the original Sig modular fire control system. The P250 wasn't successful, perhaps because it was DA only.

2023-04-20 14:36:20 +0000 UTCProbably not relevant to this pistol but it's my understanding that many of out of battery discharges are caused by broken firing pins where a piece of the firing pin gets stuck in the "bolt' face and slam fires the gun before it is locked. I think striker fire systems fixed this.

2023-04-20 14:26:40 +0000 UTCIan, I don’t know if you’re aware but Massachusetts makes every pistol sold in the state go thru drop testing and requrires the pistol be dropped on the rear of the slide,I’m not sure of the exact angle, but the 320 did pass even the Massachusetts drop testing

2023-04-20 13:01:52 +0000 UTCIan, thanks for that interesting and detailed analysis. I have witnessed a couple of failures due to defective factory ammunition and one due to a defective handload. That one was my fault. Thankfully it was only a 'squib' with no powder rather than a double charge.

2023-04-20 12:55:37 +0000 UTCAnother issue with using reloaded ammo could be insufficient case mouth tension resulting in the projectile being forced deeper into the casing when the round is chambered.

2023-04-20 12:49:42 +0000 UTCDefinitely. Also foreign material getting into the holster while inserting the gun - the elastic drawstrings on the waist of some jackets are a prime contributor to this happening.

2023-04-20 12:41:35 +0000 UTCThe "exploding" pistols could be the result of low quality ammunition being used. There are reports, and youtube videos of certain brands of imported 7.62x51 causing guns to have catastrophic failures. It would not be hard to imagine that there could be issues with 9mm luger ammo as well.
