Backstage Pass #5
Added 2020-08-11 07:49:51 +0000 UTCHey there, welcome back to Backstage Pass! Patreon apparently ate the original version of this post (which was supposed to go up Friday), so I guess I just have to post it again.
This week I wanted to talk about experimentation with comics, and my experience with it! Which is to say, I think a lot of my improvement with my comic and art in general comes when I step out of my comfort zone to try something new rather than polish what I'm already comfortable with. I'll sometimes feel like I've cornered myself and get stuck in an art rut, and trying something new is a good way for me to get out of that rut. Though when it comes to sequential art like comics, it brings about a new conundrum- How should I handle consistency if I'm constantly shifting my approach to art? How far can I push before the audience notices? The threshold thankfully doesn't seem to be as fragile as I tend to think it is, but I still feel like I should be careful rolling out new changes. This is partially why I've held off on anatomy studies for characters that I've been sorely itching for (mostly in that I want to envision them better in a 3D space), though that also is in part due to not being able to focus on studies for very long while pages are in need of being created. At the end of the day though, I will generally prioritize my own comfort with my art over consistency, I think it's more important to feel motivated so I don't end up loathing the project for decisions I made years ago.
