I’ve always been conflicted about shooting something like this, but I also know that when something intrigues me and someone feels that something is “scandalous,” I feel even more inclined to shoot it.
I want to prove (to myself) I can.
We tried it on this set, and I like the results, but I’m not entirely satisfied with them.
(There are some more bonus material on Discord for Photographers and The Vault tiers)
But that’s OK:
When I started shooting dance, I needed to form an opinion on what I wanted the images to do or inflict on the viewer.
A dancer doing a Grand Jeté is not a dance picture.
It’s not a picture that depicts ballet.
Ballet is about fluidity, elegant motion, choreography to music, and telling a story.
A dancer frozen in time suspended mid-air in the middle of a jump that you would miss if you blink your eyes at the wrong time is impressive and shows that the dancer is probably capable.
So it’s a picture of a dancer, not a dance picture per se.
And it’s the same with this.
I see this set as a step on the way before I make my next set, which hopefully will be even better.
I recently stumbled over an interview with George Clooney, who said,”You learn nothing from success, and you learn everything from failure. Fear of failure is what’s holding people back.”
And I think that is precisely it.
Try out things, especially things that scare you - or things you think other people think you shouldn’t do.
It will help you grow.
