Well, in the absence of any response (thought it would be a longshot), I found a website: quarkndagger.com, which is a resource for fantasy and scifi writers and has a guide for how to research for science fiction novel writing. I will probably end up trying to find some genetics graduate student who might be willing to give me a little time.
