TAG Chapter 1 Progress: Update #28

Okay, so I've got my new graphics card, and it's every bit as awesome as I hoped! Received it yesterday and immediately installed and started working with it. Sooo much faster! Much faster to create scenes (still images, not scenes like how I use that word normally), and probably even better: but even faster to render them. This will greatly speed up production, and that makes me very happy.

This changeover isn't without hiccups, as I found out how crazy hot this card runs! The PC fans I have are not good enough to cool this beast. I have some new ones on order which I'll apparently get Sunday. It's possible though that they won't be effective enough in the PC case I have. I'll have to test after replacing the fans. If not, I'll immediately order a new case that will do a better job. Fortunately even the best air-cooling PC case (which is what I'd order) isn't that expensive. At first I was so excited at the speed of this card I didn't realize how hot it was running, but to give you an idea, the RAM memory on the card was sometimes getting as hot as 94ºC during renders!!! That's about 200ºF for my fellow Americans!!! Definitely NOT good for electronics. I had all my windows open, the sides removed from the case and an electric fan lying on the floor blowing air directly at the card and it only dropped it 2ºC. So until I can improve that I'm going to postpone rendering. Shouldn't be a problem though - the temperatures are just fine if I'm not rendering, and I can still create a whole lot of stills in the meantime that will be ready to render when the heat problem is solved. I'm confident that a night (or two at most) of rendering with the new card while I sleep should get them all knocked out.

As it is now, even though it shows below that I've only completed 15 renders, there are 3 more done and ready to render. By the time I go to bed I'll knock another one out, and who knows how many more this weekend, but quite a few.
