Woof, so today's comic is super personal (Haha, says the girl whose entire job revolves around masturbating and telling the world about it?)

But yeah, I've been really nervous about this comic going live.

Is it worth getting in contact with someone like Zak Smith and finding out what their experience of doing porn and having a primary profession is? Although in Zak's case I suspect the reaction is different, as he's male. People are probably more likely to just look on him as being a "lucky man".

Your comic was how I found this comic, Danielle!

Annie K

That is super unfortunate that people get judgmental and make harassing comments to you about this great comic! Why do people gotta hate?

First off I'll agree with everyone else here that your fan base will respect your decision whatever it ends up being. You share so much of yourself with us so honestly and unpretentiously that it's easy to empathize and hope you end up as happy as possible. Secondly, it sounds like you really want to try this and are only hesitating because you're worried about the effect it might have on your social image. That brings several things to my mind: 1) It makes sense that the video would have to be public (they only do it to support their site), but is it a requirement that they use your real name? If they were willing to post it under your "porn name" then it wouldn't show up in a web search for Erika Moen. 2) Did you worry about the same things before you started publishing a web comic about sex toys (including significant personal stuff)? 'Cause you got over it enough to do that, and I think it's turned out really well. 3) I've always thought it might be fun to try making porn too, so I think it's really cool that you have this opportunity and that your husband is all for it. But I can also imagine being a bit worried about giving it a try and not having to turn out well. Could there be hint of performance anxiety somewhere in your head that makes it easy to use other concerns to avoid finding out? I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just that you should understand your reactions as completely as possible before passing up a rare opportunity to actually implement a fantasy. I'm hoping you decide to do it: reading the comics you would create describing the experience is probably the closest I'll ever get to doing it myself. And I think you'd do a great job of both the filming and the reporting, I trust you to experience this fantasy for me.

Whatever you do Erika, you have my complete respect - it's awesome that you've been given this opportunity :D Would totally have the same doubts in your position - and totally wise to think it over, and talk to porn peeps about it. Might be worth looking into the Drag queen Violet Chachki - who totally OWNED their porn video from the past spreading around after they became famous. Self-confidence and "Hell yeahs I did that", and driving the conversation towards reminding people to refer to "Their Penis" not "His". Was really cool to see :D

Whatever you decide, this complete stranger will still totally dig your comics.

I believe that this could only happen on condition of it being filmed and released.

Wow, this just about the most personal comic I think I've seen you write/draw. Regardless of which direction you choose, thanks for sharing this with us.

Why does the world have to see it? You could do it for yourself - unless it's important to have it available for any & all.

First: I LOVE the way you drew Leia in this!! And yourself! So many great faces in this strip!! And thank you for sharing it. :) Second: May I throw my voice into the crowd of your peers/friends? My opinion of you doing a porno would only go so far as "did Erika do what she wanted to do, completely separate of what she felt other people wanted her to do (or not do)?" If you want to do it, consequences aside, you should OWN THAT DEEN D and, shall we say, take the position, full speed ahead! It's like your (our) attitude toward the possibility of a dirty pic being released into the wild: hey, it's a hot pic, so who gives a shit? We'd own it and be unashamed, right? If you feel confident that you can take that attitude if (when) someone gives you shit for making porn, then you'll always be the domme of the conversation. ;) On the other hand, if the desire to make this porno available to the world makes you feel uneasy (not because of the inevitable assholish feedback, but for personal reasons), remember to accept and respect those feelings. James Deen ain't going anywhere. You can give yourself time to consider it, and if you decide you're not 100% comfortable with it, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. Follow your heart-cunt. In short: as long as YOU feel comfortable with what you've decided to do, you really can't lose. :) And, as I'm sure you know, I've got your back, too, no matter what you decide! <3

Love this one, made me comment for the first time, hoping you will read it. It is a admirable comic and an great insight you are giving. This whole experience is intriguing and being able to witness it through your comic would surely make for some special and unique comics. On the other hand, the arguments you give for not doing it are very valid. Knowing you (do I know you? I feel like I know a part of you through your comics. This particular part of you comes across as intelligent and considerate) whatever you decide, it will end up in some special comics one way or another. So, although some voyeuristic part of me is hoping that you will do it, I don't think we, the audience, can really lose whichever way you go.

Long-time fan, first-time commenter. ;) Hi! I think it's really, really awesome that you decided to share this conversation -- I think it's important to show people the behind-the-scenes of what it's like to be someone who Does Work In Public Relating to Sex. Porn is the thing that has the most socially devastating consequences (sadly), but there are also consequences for doing sex-positive writing/comics/education/toymaking/podcasting/etc. I was a roboticist doing K-12 STEM educational outreach before I decided to start making geeky sex toys and writing about it (<a href="http://toymakerproject.com/hammer" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://toymakerproject.com/hammer</a> , <a href="http://toymakerproject.com/tickler)," rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://toymakerproject.com/tickler),</a> and I had to make the conscious decision that if I ever published anything relating to sex with my name on it, I would never work with kids again. I've now made choices that will forever affect what kind of work I can do in the future. My dear friend/activist/sex worker Ms. Maggie Mayhem has called performing in porn "social suicide." It's not something to be entered into lightly. I've had some of the same fantasies and curiosities around being in porn, so I feel like I can empathize with where you're at. No matter what you decide to do, there are a lot of us out here who will respect your decision. Either way, we've got your back, too.
