EARLY ACCESS: Avatar the Last Airbender 1x3 FULL REACTION

Sokka bonding with Sai over engineering reminds us how young he is, and how in wartime, it’s hard to focus on simple joys. Katara explores her trauma and learns to remember the good things about her mom in moments where she feels held back by her death. Jet shows how easy it can be to cross the line into cruelty even with seemingly noble convictions.

The fight choreography was particularly cool in this episode. Jet’s dual, hooked swords show impressive range and grace. Zuko and Aang’s hand-to-hand combat was not only performed with technical excellence but it was edited simply, which often makes fights feel far better. It’s too common to miss moves and fabricate a fast pace with many quick cuts. Can't wait to see what episode 4 brings.

MYY GABBAGES!!!

Ihakara Waata Toby

As an ATLA superfan, my biggest problem is not the fact that they made changes to the narrative structure or even characters. It's the extremely poor writing, acting, and pacing. It's shocking to me that a major studio was able to produce media that leans so heavily on the "tell, don't show" writing faux pas. These writing choices make characters less bland, make emotionally impactful moments carry less weight, and muddy the entire viewing experience. One doesn't need to have any familiarity with the OG show to recognize these flaws. Additionally, I saw someone point out that with its 8 hour-long episodes, it actually had the same runtime as the original series' first book. So you would think they would be able to tell a coherent and well-written story. But somehow even with removing unnecessary parts of the show and combining 3 - 4 episodes into one, everything still felt rushed.

never thought i would come across someone who hasn’t seen atla…anything is possible. WATCH NOW. you will in for the adventure for a lifetime. ofc after this show since you already started

Great Reaction! I think its not that much of a huge difference cause the character's motives are still the same, it just went about in a different way/location. For example in the cartoon, JET was gonna blow up a dam and therefore a small village with innocent people. Here, they just made JET and his team blow up areas of the city STILL inhabited innocent people. In both versions, The Mechanist was indeed a traitor and making things for the fire nation...so combining their storylines makes sense as their intertwined (Jet hate anything associated with the Fire Nation). So check! They got that right. I also dont mind that it occurred in Omashu because in the cartoon, the Jet stuff happened in a random forest😂 And most fans say that the weakest episode in the cartoon is "The Northern Airtemple" where they randomly meet the mechanist. So combining 1 random episode, with one very diskliked one, to create a more epic tail was smart writing. As they share similar themes. At first I have to admit I was hesitant at the changes in this ep...but as fan I can say they did an alright job here. Very difficult to do to satisfy BOTH newcomers AND fans. It makes sense for fans to feel overwhelmed by the combination of like 3 episodes in 1😂 But I hear NEW watchers loved it! So there are VERY diverse opinions from different viewers which I find very intriguing.

I posted this on YouTube but I felt it was worth repeating here... I am finding the reactions from purests the most interesting. Niether good nor bad, just interesting. Personal Opinion: As someone who watched the cartoon back in the day and several times over throughout the years, I love this retelling. Honestly, even though it's a thousand times shorter than One Piece, it faces the same challenges as a live action: IT CANNOT BE ONE TO ONE. Which is the same problem every anime, animated, or even written (ie: books and comics) media faces when transfered to live action. It just doesn't work. The creators of One Piece knew that, realized they had 30 years of hindsight and a big enough world to move some pieces around and STILL end up with the same story that would work with the media of live action and hook new audiences and longer running fans alike. I think the creators of this ATLAB have done amazing! Blending the arcs as they have allows room for the story to breath in the time and media they are given. I'm also finding some of the smaller tweeks fun because while they aren't orginal to the story they still make sense to the story and add something new for us enjoy instead of just recycling every detail. The bottom line of it all is that you can tell the people who worked on this show love the original content it was based on and have remained respectful of it even through an awful lot of heat and mudslinging from the fan community. I think that counts for an awful lot. 💗 This has been my Ted Talk.😅

I think people over critiquing the show just don't know how to have fun. There are plenty of flaws but its still a super enjoyable adaption and everyone did a good job making it. I think what disappoints me the most is when there seems to be a pile on, on the child actors for their appearances. As if that matters in the first place, but to be outright bullying these children, its so sad. Also i think you actually need to hire kids that have softer features, because they are gonna age over the time it takes to make this show, and all the casting looks like people who will stay looking youthful for longer. Though i saw Aangs actor recently and he's getting tall fast XD

GillyBean

So Ian (Sokka) and Dallas (Zuko) have prior martial arts training but everyone got 6-8 weeks of bootcamp before shooting. Ian said that actually, the hardest part of filming was the scenes with Suki. He had to basically unlearn his martial arts training to now look like a beginner and clumsy

It was a while (months if not a couple years) ago, from a couple articles reposted on social media.

This was a pretty efficient way to combine multiple storylines from the animated series given the limited number of episodes here. There're certainly a lot of mixed feelings about this adaptation and i think people can forget all the things they get right. I love Sokka's, Zuko's and Ozai's performances here and the cities and environments are amazing. As some have mentioned, I think once you stop comparing it with the original, there's a lot to appreciate here.

JessTellsTales

no way animated book one is still significantly better than this its not close at all. I had a lot of fun with the live action but the writing quality in the original is just better in every way. plot, characters, action, cause and effect, you name it

Banana Hammocks

Oh, interesting! I didn't know that they left for that reason. Where did you hear that?

JessTellsTales

Man I wish you guys would binge this

C. J. Ramirez

my issues are with certain character writing, especially azula. I think the visuals, casting ect are great, but the the writing for Azula is weak. Also, i think it says it all when watching the original, the oak was like wow these have great lessons, you really don't get those in this because of the writing. Its very netflix. They write based on analytics.

James Ventola

Emphasis on legions

Marquis keel

This is great but the animated show is legions above it, the only exception may be book one.

Scott Bringel

Haven’t watched the animated series but now I feel like I need to. I’m liking the series so far, I think Netflix did a great job but like I said I don’t have anything to compare it to. Great video as always boys! #mycabbages 😂

Christy Oliver

Another great episode! Love the My Cabbages tease.

Deborah Rogers

Definitely

Ron Banks

That twist with Zuko was so beautifully written that I wish it was in the og series.

Scott Bringel

Honestly what a genius way to blend three key storylines from book one. I never would have realized how well Jet and the machinist’s storylines complimented each other.

Scott Bringel

Overall I enjoyed this episode...they had to combine a few episodes into one and changed a few things here and there but thats okay. I understand its an adaptation not a remake and they only had 8 episodes to work with. So far all three episodes have been pretty good overall minus a few nitpickings here and there. They def kept a lot of things people loved about the original.

Alyssa Dyson

For what it's worth I heard the creators left due to Netflix wanting to be "more faithful" and the original writers wanting to change more stuff. (EDIT: To add that I wouldn't take this as gospel, but just that we don't really know why the creators left, besides creative differences.) As someone who loves (and has nostalgia for) the animated series: I love Netflix's adaptation equally, if not more than, the OG Season 1. But can definitely see how people would not like the adaptation at the same time.

Jordan

my cabbages!

Dude episode 6. I was seriously just about done with this show until that episode, and it won me over big time.

JessTellsTales

Fixed :)

I think mixed reviews are expected for an adaptation of a popular IP such as this. Overall, I feel like the show is really good. They have time to make improvements for next season. Episodes 4 and 6 are really going to show you this show has heart with some Zuko & Iroh moments.

Ron Banks

I love what they did with this episode it flowed really well to me.

Raquel Perodin

Episode 3 for anyone who isnt caught up

Steven Warner

This title made me think y’all had binged the entire rest of the show 😂😂😂
