EARLY ACCESS: Avatar The Last Airbender 1x1 FULL REACTION

It's finally here! Avatar the Last Airbender! From the opening sequence, it’s clear that this show is aimed at a slightly older audience. The bending is extreme, great-looking, and fairly violent. The CGI and martial arts elements are gorgeous, and the firebending is absolutely brutal to witness (in a good way). Watching the Fire Lord burn a man alive by grabbing his wrist sets a serious tone immediately.

We are excited for more of this! What was your reaction to the first episode?

Nobody's trying to change your mind. I maintain however, that you decided it would be bad before you had ANY reason to. There is no way that approaching an adaptation with that attitude is NOT going to directly affect how you engage with it, and that is NOT a fault of the show, it's your projections.

Amy Petty

Love at first sight

C. J. Ramirez

Counterpoint: it is actually good - which is not to say there aren't problems - and that has nothing to do with people weighing it against Shyamalan's production. They're not *rewriting* it. It's an adaptation with some fairly minor differences. They cannot make a shot-for-shot remake of the cartoon and why would anyone want them to? There's no purpose to remaking a show just to be identical in every way to the original except that one is animated and the other live action.

Amy Petty

lol, it's only the first episode. He's not in love with her yet.

Amy Petty

I am glad they like it, but them liking what I think it is a mediocre show with 2/3 good characters Zuko, Azula/Iroh is not changing my mind

Alex2882

It's not bad, though...? You'll notice that our boys loved it? Or did you comment without watching their reaction? That said, if you decide "it's going to be bad" months or years before the show is even out, then that is a choice YOU make and has nothing to do with the quality of the show itself. It's not a fair or objective way to approach an adaptation. Declaring that it's bad before you've even seen it is a personally-imposed limitation that reflects your biases more than any actual flaws in the show.

Amy Petty

Oh, for sure! I do hate that you feel like you have to skip some series, but I can certainly understand time constraints. I just remembered that you weren't part of the anime reaction either. I was all "what, does he just hate Avatar or something?" (I know you don't hate Avatar).

Amy Petty

Editing & back end. There's a lot to do 🤙🤙 and there's some things I don't want to hold up which is why you'll see me miss some things. 🤙🤙 Hope this helps.

Badd Medicine

Why is Diamond Dave not a part of this reaction series?

Amy Petty

its not just expecting everything to be the same and you know it, if you watched the og that is

Pedestrian

finally able to watch it!! solid first episode.. there are some changes i really didn’t like but even so i still loved it!! can’t wait to see the rest. doing good so far Netflix 😊✨ i also really love the casting.

jasminethegreat

Everyone need to stop acting like a live action show is going to compare with the nostalgic cartoon you watched in your childhoods 20 years ago, just enjoy it for what it is because it is in no way bad, the only people who think it is are fans of the cartoon

calum1

If you seen Saltburn and some other reactions, you know we don't hold back if we don't like it 🤙

Badd Medicine

I really hope they aren't afraid to say negative stuff for view sake, cause the general fan base seems negative on it and they are super positive

James Ventola

sorry, they disney this like star wars... they weakened katara and soka

James Ventola

I'm more disappointed with the characters. Aang, Sokka, and Iroh all feel way off to me in terms of how they act. Not their looks but they just don't feel like the same characters really at all. Also apparently Aang can fly without his glider....ok

Ivan Rasmussen

I think it was just ok. I feel like the acting, and dialogue was stiff, and didn’t feel natural. Some of the story felt rushed, and the relationship with the group doesn’t really feel like a family like they did in the animated show. The CGI was definitely noticeable in some of the shots when Aang went into the Avatar state. You could tell he was tied to wires on set. My biggest issue comes from All the exposition/info dumping about things we should learn later on in the story.

Joe Bettcher

Agreed there was WAY too much exposition/info dumping.

Joe Bettcher

I liked this episode most of it was pretty good but Katara caring for Aang without much bonding felt rushed, Sokka is doing it out of respect for Aang defending them at least so that made more sense, I didn't care for Aang just randomly leaving before the Fire Nation attacked instead of running away from his responsibilities, same with Aang accepting his role so fast as The Avatar, also I don't like how they made Aang basically fly like Zaheer instead of using his glider making it seem less useful, I am worried what other stuff they will change that didn't need to be changed, but I am still excited to watch the show and see how they do it.

Josh B.

What they did with bumi from wat I’ve seen ain for me I feel like how the diehard last of us fans felt

Marquis keel

I think everybody is trying their best to love this after what we went through with M Night Shyamalan. But I'm sorry I have to be honest, This was not good! The acting was bad and the invented new storyline was dumb compared to the real story. Because of M. Night Shyamalan's mess, we THINK this is good. But that movie stunk so bad that anything compared to that feels like a masterpiece! I don't understand WHY they keep trying to rewrite this story! Just tell the story that everybody knew to grow and love! And of course I don't mean everything has to be the same, scene by scene and line by line, but keep the main story. All this ridiculous extra is disappointing and frustrating. I felt like I was watching a B film. I'm sorry. I'm glad everybody else liked it. Maybe the next few episodes will change my mind, but I don't even want to watch them to be honest.

Cherrie

I love this first episode. My only complaint has nothing to do with the episode or show. It has to do with Netflix. I wish this was a weekly show where we get a new episode each week.

John F.

Just finished the first episode went in with pretty high expectation sadly was a little disappointed mainly with the storyline mashing together I think they could've done a way better job but visuals are amazing.

Jordan Garrett

if it was amazing it would be the same as the animation its not they took out some very key ingredients that made what it was

Jordan Garrett

It was so amazing I teared up few times what an amazing adaptation. It makes me so excited to see you guys excited. Your excitement is contagious!

Raquel Perodin

The acting is a bit stiff for me sometimes it seemed as if they were reading from a script and didnt seem the most natural but because everyone is so young im sure it will improve. I loved the bending and choreography, music and cinematography. I can understand some of the changes they made not everything adapted from animation is going to be exact. It's not perfect but Im still enjoying it.

Alyssa Dyson

Team avatar is back AT LAST*

Cojuancidence

That’s why it’s important to go into watching an adaptation not expecting everything to be the same. You will always leave disappointed if you expect that

Doyoungismyult

It’s amazing

Doyoungismyult

I stopped doing by the 3rd episode and just enjoyed the ride.

Marcus Depalmer

I can't wait to see your reactions. I started with an open mind and was excited but I was somewhat disappointed. If you don't compare it to the original, it's great and very well done.

Katarina

Good show but the acting was sooo weak, I don't know if it is the writing or directing but it feels like it is lacking any kind of emotions

Happy Teferi

Once I stopped comparing it with the cartoon I loved it.

Deborah Rogers

I waited to watch with ya'll and Eeee! I loved this first episode, it gave me that nostalgic feeling that the movie could not. I think the characters feel like themselves, thank God Sokka is still funny lol. The opening was a surprise, but I can appreciate the darker element and elaborating on the back story adds something new to this. It really emphasizes just how ruthless the fire nation actually was to kill off an entire race of people, and then hunt down benders.

Bri

I knew it was going to be bad since the moment the creators left at the beginning of production smh

Alex2882

I had a lot of fun with it, im trying not to let my expectations get too high. I had little problems with a lot of scenes so i'd like to focus on what i liked. I thought everything from when katara and aang see zukos ship to when aang gets captured was amazing, maybe even better than how the original show did it. I was most worried about finding sokka and zukos actors because their voices and characters are so unique in the original, but i was happily proven wrong because sokka and zuko are my favorite actors so far!

Banana Hammocks

It's already better than M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar. I won't go into depth since I won't be watching the entire series right away. I'll watch it with these guys and form my opinion in the end.

Arudorin

I honestly have a love/hate relationship with it. There are some parts I like and some I don't. Overall I'd give the show a solid 7.9/10. There's definitely room for improvement but it's not as bad as everyone is saying it is. The biggest thing I don't like is the mashing up of storylines but I am excited for next season!

Rajdeep Kang

I thought it was just okay. Which is a little disappointing because i was so excited. I think the MVP is Sokka.

Liona N

I agree, but thats the thing with live action, it can never capture the hyper-realistic expressions we want that animation can produce, so it's always best to go into it knowing that and blanking out the unrealistic expectation. I find it easier to enjoy an adaptation that way. That being said, the acting could be just little bit better especially on the kids part.

Scott Bringel

The intro scenes were fire (no pun intended) but when it got to the kid actors i thought they could use a little work, but they were good overall and will definitely grow more into their roles. Other than it being it bit rushed, i loved it.

Scott Bringel

I waited to watch along with you guys but after seeing episode 1 you guys musk be crazy to think im gonna wait week to week now. but ill come back and revisit with the crew

TinCan Cosmanaut

Same

Oulianor Timothee

After watching the whole season, I think the show is really good, but it definitely suffers if you constantly are comparing it to the animated show. Tonally it is very different, and a lot of scenes have been reworked to fit better for live action. I think I'm going to like it a lot more on rewatch because I'll be better able to appreciate it for what it is rather than being focused on what it isn't.

Zachary Gaudreau

Perfection 😁🤩 🍿🍿🍿

Love10 ❤️

There were a few moments where I felt kataras acting was wierd and the most recent episode I stopped on (5) I didn’t love. I will say I think they did an awesome job with the reformatting and sokka is perfection in my opinion. I love the fighting and CGI. Aangs actor did an amazing job but there are just some things that I missed from the original that I was hoping they would have. I would say it is up there with Harry Potter for accuracy but still great. Definitely not the Percy Jackson movies level of bad. Some things to improve but I think this will go far!

Abigail.M

I can’t wait to watch this and Man From U.N.C.L.E. tomorrow!

John F.

I loved this first episode. A good 9/10 for me. I just wish we saw Aangs love for Katara but it didn’t really show in the episode

C. J. Ramirez

Sweet! I'm so happy to see you guys keeping an open mind through this. I'm only as far as you guys and i found myself starting to pick things apart at times, then I reminded myself that this is a different medium and things that may have worked in animation wouldn't translate as well in live-action. I'm excited to give this a shot with yall! Also, get Oak some sleep! 😂

JessTellsTales

I watched the first episode. I felt several CGI moments looked too fake. It was ok. Not as good as the animated series. I wish Iroh felt and sounded a little more like Iroh. Some of the changes I didn’t like that much, I was especially disappointed with how short the stay on Zuko’s ship was, that Aang didn’t fall into the water and go into the Avatar state, and that he didn’t deflect Zuko’s fireball to make the snow fall on his ship. The episode felt like too much back story and rushing other parts. But definitely better than the movie and I like the casting of Aang. But Katara’s personality feels too flat.

Ginger

I’m so glad y’all put it up tonight! I was waiting to watch it with y’all.

Sierra Anderson

Same as a lot of others here I already finished the whole thing. I really need to sleep now, but I will come watch your reactions later. I can tell already, though, if you enjoyed the first episode the full season will be a blast 😁

Naitsab_33

I also felt like they gave plot point so fast. They did the classic movie mistake of "show don't tell."

Sandra

I echo your sentiment completely

Shazon D Lothan

Just finished the complete season. I thought there was good moment in the show but overall I didn't really care the show that much.

Sandra

Cant wait to watch this! As a long time Avatar fan (since the show aired) i think the first episode was great. I dont mind that they take a different approach to it because they still followed the story. Though it did feel a little rushed in my opinion. Im happy with the live action (first episode atleast) and that all i wanted. The show itself is PERFECT. So to make it a good and not disappointing show is hard 😂. Im satisfied and happy with this.

AyaaChann

I was just thinking about going to bed, but that can wait now.

Curtis Rice

Looking forward to these. Enjoyed them very much.

Shazon D Lothan

So excited to see your reactions!😆

val

Saw it and personally I'm not a fan. I feel like the characters are off, the tone is off, and some things are just better animated and I feel like Avatar is one of those things. You lose so many expressions, the cool bending visuals, and it feels like it loses what makes Avatar special. I'd rather watch the better one. Hope you guys enjoy your time though!

Ivan Rasmussen

I thought the first episode was a strong start. Interesting decisions they made, i deff got the feel of nostalgia when gran gran started reciting the OG opening intro. I loved that they r showing the damages that the fire nation does, to really show how brutal the war was. Looking forward to watching the rest with y’all! 🌲🪨💧🌊💨🌬️🔥☄️

Lily

Alright!! So first episode I thought, of course, was incredible and I just finished the whole season and yes... it was absolutely amazing. My elementary school self is screaming with joy, and that was almost 15 years ago! I found myself reacting at times with:“What? Why did they change it that way? That’s… interesting” through the episodes and by the end of the episodes I was left thinking “Ohhh okay that was absolutely brilliant I get it now.” Some of us need to be more like Iroh in realizing the path to destiny isn’t always the same straight line.

Eli Spring

Ohhh shit
