EARLY ACCESS: Shrek the Third FULL REACTION
Added 2024-02-14 21:23:34 +0000 UTCShrek 3 is here. On the positive side, the film maintains the irreverent humor that has become synonymous with the Shrek series. Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz reprise their roles with the same charm, delivering witty lines that elicit genuine laughs. The film introduces new characters, such as Justin Timberlake's Artie. The animation remains visually appealing, capturing the whimsical essence of the fairy-tale world.
The film attempts to explore themes of responsibility and fatherhood, but these elements don't receive the depth they deserve. The emotional stakes are lower, and the character arcs lack the resonance of Shrek and Fiona's earlier journey. The film's reliance on humor sometimes feels like a distraction from the underdeveloped plot rather than a complementary element.
The introduction of Arthur Pendragon (Artie) as a potential heir to the throne adds an interesting dynamic to the story. However, the film struggles to get us to invest in Arthur's character development, making it difficult for the audience to connect with or invest emotionally in his journey. This lack of investment in Arthur's storyline contributes to the overall sense of the film treading familiar ground without truly breaking new storytelling territory.
The soundtrack remains a strong aspect, featuring a mix of classic and contemporary songs that enhance the film's overall experience. The use of music is effective in capturing the film's tone and maintaining an entertaining rhythm.
Shrek the Third is a mixed bag. While it delivers some laughs and maintains the visual appeal of the Shrek universe, it struggles to fully invest in new characters like Arthur Pendragon, ultimately missing the opportunity to elevate the series to new heights. "Shrek the Third" is an enjoyable watch for its humor and animation but misses the magic that made the first two entries true animated classics.

2024-03-18 21:31:19 +0000 UTCThis movie has some moments of absolute gold but overall it really is missing the magic of the first two. Shrek 4 is actually a lot better

2024-02-18 06:44:05 +0000 UTCHonestly, the high school scene and the princesses breaking out of jail and breaking INTO the castle carry the whole movie for me. Otherwise it really isn't as funny as the first two. It is the weakest in the Shrek series, but still a good film compared to a lot of others.

2024-02-15 16:19:34 +0000 UTCThe reason you don’t understand why people don’t like it is because of your lack of taste, other people just have better taste for movies than you. That’s the response I usually get, and it’s sound logic

2024-02-15 16:09:24 +0000 UTCI think 3 is a nice follow up of 1 and 2. It all comes full circle. In 1, you have Shrek who learns that what people think of you (a monster in this case) does not make you a monster. He's an introvert who finds comfort in his solitude because it's easier this way. Until he meets friends and a woman he loves, who bring the best out of him. In 2, Shrek learns that he doesn't need to change for someone. But also, his willingness to make Fiona happy (to what he thinks she wants) is also very honorable. In 3, Shrek TEACHES all that he previously learned to Artie. He acts as a father figure, although he's scared of the unknown of being a father. When it comes to Fiona, they didn't dive too much into her journey to be a mother, I think because she's ready and wants babies, which is completely different from Shrek. She's not scared because she knows Shrek will be there, and a good father. (proof at the end with their teamwork). Instead, she has the clueless childless friends who try to give advices, (Cinderella giving a mini shovel and a bag to scoop poo, Snow White giving a dwarf-babysitter - assuming Shrek and Fiona won't want to take care of their baby, Rapunzel says that Shrek and Fiona will have time to work on their marriage - assuming that their marriage will fall apart after the birth, Aurora says that Fiona will be tired all day, Snow White assumes Fiona will let herself go, and Gingy talks about stretchmarks (as if it's bad), then Rapunzel adds to 'say goodbye to romance', as if it's a given) All of that screams many things, 1) that it's possibly how those princesses are being treated by their respective 'prince' / or that they are single and have no clue 2) the princesses (or more like bitter friends) may be jealous and envious of her good relationship with Shrek, an ogre, while their princes aren't all princy and helpful, and the princesses are not really supporting her fully in her decision to have babies. (Doris and Lillian are the only ones who truly cheer for Fiona) 3) a deeper issue would be to expect the worst and try to normalize it just like the princesses are saying. They are pretty much referencing to 'married single mothers'. Atleast, that's how I interpret it all. It's also nice to see that the princesses decided to save themselves rather than wait for their princes to save them. They obviously had that capacity to do something for themselves all this time but were taught to believe they should just wait for a man. In 3, I feel like it was necessary for Artie to be there, as a King was needed to take the throne, since Shrek didn't want to be King, wanted to go back home. People who were abandoned by a parent may relate to him. He needed someone, a father figure, to teach him good values, to listen to him, his worries, his fears, guide him, protect him. Having this heart to heart conversation with Shrek helped Artie realize he could also become whoever he wanted to be. That others didn't define him, and he stepped up to the plate, solved the problem with the Villains without having to use violence, he applied what he learned from Shrek and taught others who needed the same advice. Nobody needed to be hurt and Artie knew how the Villains felt. It also shows what the impact a good father figure can have on a child/teenager. Also, I know there's complaints about the fact the princesses didn't fight, but fighting wasn't the point to begin with. If they had fought, it would've been this whole thing of Good vs Bad again, that Bad should/can only stay Bad and where do you place Artie's good speech in the end? What makes him a good king is that he sees where the problem is and fixes it, doesn't amplify problem. And he knows everyone deserves a second chance if they are willing to work on being good. Charming used the Villains' vulnerability for his personal gain while Artie uplifted them and encouraged them to be good instead of seeking revenge. The introduction of cool characters; the princesses aren't random because in Shrek 2, Fiona had written about them in her journal, talking about a sleepover she couldn't go to because of her curse, so they are childhood friends. Merlin was great! Artie may fall flat to some but I think he has another perspective/position that some people may relate to. And in the end, everything comes full circle, Shrek and Fiona are back to their Swamp, and starting a new chapter as parents. Lillian is present, Shrek's friends are there to help out. I don't know I think it's a great conclusion to the trilogy. The animation keeps getting better and the music is always amazing. I've watched all the movies in French first, because that's my first language and the jokes in the translation are pretty funny too. Some hit better than in English so there's that.

2024-02-15 14:34:34 +0000 UTCi'd be really curious to hear why you think this one stands up to the rest. its really hard for me to rank 1,2, and 4 but i think they are significantly better than 3.

2024-02-15 12:04:49 +0000 UTCI'll never understand the hate this movie gets. Of course its no Shrek 2, which is the best Shrek movie but Shrek 3 is still a good, fun movie. Can't wait for Shrek 4 though, for me it's pretty close to the second one (which, again, controversial but idc lol)

2024-02-15 09:59:42 +0000 UTCagreed. I loved the princesses and the body swap stuff. Didn't love the prince thing but it had it's moments. Maybe i'm bias cause i remember seeing this one in theaters since i was older (9 years old), so it holds a special place in my heart. Plus i remember buying the baby ogre toys lol.

2024-02-15 01:53:09 +0000 UTCI just watched this for the first time with you guys and I like that we had a lot of the same reactions as we watched and yelled out the same things—even the comments about GNR!! And I forgot about Airplane and totally missed that reference until you guys pointed it out. I agree, this one wasn’t bad but I didn’t find myself laughing as much or as emotionally invested but it was still a fun time. It just didn’t wow me like the first two did. Either way it’s been great to watch with you and I look forward to the next and to the Puss in Boots movies because they’re all new to me.

2024-02-15 00:06:48 +0000 UTCI personally liked this one though it isn't as great as the first two. However, on rewatches, I only do Shrek 1&2, then go to Puss in Boots. I haven't seen the second movie (waiting for you guys) but I hear it is great! I truly don't remember Shrek 4 so it probably wasn't that good, as I only saw it once.

2024-02-15 00:03:01 +0000 UTCAlso the part where Gingy sees his life flash before his eyes is amazing. They should’ve made like a short film of his life with those clips. I’d totally watch that.

2024-02-15 00:01:09 +0000 UTCI never understand why people don't like this one. Or rather, appreciate it less. Second and third are my favorites in the franchise. THEN First and Fourth. Yet, I feel like they all make sense together, have great storylines of their own and probably all 5/5 score for me. BUT I do prefer and watch Second and Third more than the other ones. Nevertheless, I'm really interested in watching your next reaction for the Fourth movie. It has a pretty interesting plot. And good lessons.

2024-02-14 23:49:59 +0000 UTCThis movie doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. It’s generally ranked the worst Shrek film while it’s actually pretty good. It’s no Shrek 2 (which in my opinion is the best) but it’s an enjoyable movie.

2024-02-14 23:29:11 +0000 UTCI agree, 4 is a lot better then this one but it’s not the greatest either but honestly anything would have been better then 3, lol. At least they have The Last Wish to look forward to

2024-02-14 22:49:51 +0000 UTCHonestly Shrek 2 is easily my top 3 Dreamworks film!
Annie519
2024-02-14 22:48:05 +0000 UTCYeah, I don’t really care for this, in my opinion it’s the worst in the series, it definitely didn’t live up to the second which I will say was no easy feat but it honestly didn’t even feel like it was trying. The OG cast is still great & I did laugh a couple of times but I just didn’t think it was that funny. Besides Merlin I thought the new characters were pretty bland, I don’t think Justin added very much. The only one I genuinely laughed at aside the OG characters was Merlin but it helped having the comedic talent of Eric Idle. It’s not the worst film, it’s not even the worst Dreamworks film, it’s just dull for me, nothing is very memorable.

2024-02-14 21:49:18 +0000 UTCYeah… I’ve been dreading when y’all got to this one. The Shrek franchise does unfortunately go downhill. The franchise starts off so strong but the last two just don’t hit the same. This is the weakest one imo. I think the last one is better and even slightly underrated, but it still lacks the magic that the first two have
