As someone who watch this one before the Gene Wilder version, I think this one fits better thematically and story wise. My biggest issue with the original is actually the fizzy lifting room. Why is Charlie the only kid exempt from the consequences of their actions? It doesn’t fit and not only is unnecessary, but completely counter to the major themes of the story. If we ignore that one problematic scene, I think they’re both about equal. Tim Burton gets points for Music, Set design, and story. Gene Wilder gets points for acting, mood, and presentation. I’d give them both a 4.5 answers, 4.3 if we’re including the problematic scene.

As part of the older crowd, the Gene Wilder version set the bar high, and this one gets maybe a 3 from me. Some people will give the film more credit because it remains truer to the original book, but I don't include that in my rating. Fun fact: One of the original TEN children's names that Roald Dahl used was a boy named "Herpes Trout". The name was changed out later.
