EARLY ACCESS: The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes FULL REACTION
Added 2024-01-03 18:10:10 +0000 UTC
What an incredible movie! There's so much to unpack. The performances from every actor were uniformly outstanding. And let's talk about that amazing score – truly fantastic! The film maintains a relentless tension that mirrors the intensity of the game itself. It goes beyond the screen, immersing us so thoroughly that it feels like we're right there in the midst of it all. Honestly, this could have been even longer, and we would have welcomed it with open arms.
In the war-torn dystopian nation of Panem, General Crassus Snow, of the noble Snow family, perishes in the First Rebellion. Thirteen years later, his son Coriolanus, an Academy student, aims to revive the family's fortune by mentoring a tribute in the 10th Annual Hunger Games. Assigned District 12's Lucy Gray Baird, Coriolanus defies expectations, earning her trust and sympathy. Proposing a sponsorship scheme, he faces intrigue, rebellion, and deadly challenges. After a series of events, including a rebel attack and personal betrayals, Coriolanus emerges as a complex figure. The story unfolds with twists, deceit, and a transformative journey, revealing the origins of the Hunger Games and Coriolanus Snow's ascent to power.
Although we haven't delved into the books ourselves, we're intrigued to learn about your experience with them and your impressions of the film. How closely did the movie adhere to the original storyline, and what are your thoughts on the adaptation?

So fun fact the film's original cut was actually 3 hours and 40 minutes long. I have yet to read the book but I do know by friends, that there were certain things cut out of the story mostly relating to Coriolanus's and Lucy Grays romance and his relationship with the Plinth family and his other classmates.
Some other things my friends have told me (well I asked) and i know Oak was speaking about it but Coriolanus is a SNAKE and a manipulative and power-hungry controlling person throughout the entire story however he did love Lucy Gray but it did become a very obsessive controlling love. I was also told that Dr Gaul (Viola Davis) actually erases the tenth hunger games, so while a distrcit 12 winner is remembered, Lucy Gray and the tenth games is forgotten. Though it is interesting that while she was not remembered her songs were.
A big part of Lucy Gray that I love is that we do not really know her, everything (book &film) is in Snow's pov. So, she is like her namesake a true mystery. Got to give it to Suzanne Collins for writing a character so powerful and impactful to the story but literally disappears from the world and history like a ghost.Like the song she sang at the lake to Coriolanus about a girl named 'Lucy Gray' who gets lost in the snow.
Though all I can think about is what Snow's thoughts were when he saw Katniss and Peeta for the first time. A dark haired girl and blonde boy from district 12 having a love story during the Hunger Games. Then when Katniss sings to Rue and when she sings the hanging tree. I know he had a mini heart attack every time Katniss appeared on screen.

A few points I would make as someone who read the book first:
1. Despite the fact that this was the longest of the movies, SO much was missing in it. In the book Snow and Lucy Gray spend much more time together before the games, and Snow and Sejanus spend lot longer in District 12. The studio could have made the movie in two parts and still not add anything extra.
2. On whether Snow loved Lucy Gray, I saw his feelings to her more like an ownership obsession. In the book he underlines multiple times that she is *his* girl. Almost like he feels entitled to her, because he helped her win the Games. And in the very beginning of the Games, he sees his "bright future", as someone who goes to university, wins admiration and a prestigious career, renovates the Snow estate, and all this with Lucy Gray by his side. So I believe he followed her, because he chased this picture, not out of genuine affection for her specifically.
3. Snows scenes with Dr. Gaul for me showed the difference in their thinking - Gaul is the psycho that loves causing pain and the Games are her way to "prove" that all people are like her, while Snow just doesn't care what happens to people as long as they are not an obstacle for him. He's completely cold and unfeeling. The only thing that motivates him is the hunger for power.
Also, a quick correction - Tigris is not Snows sister, she's his cousin. And, I don't know if you remember Mockingjay part 2, but she is the designer that helped Katniss and her crew when they were being chased by Capitol troops.

I felt same way about Donald Sutherland's line, but now I am interpreting it differently, what did SNOW love the most? Himself, not Lucy Gray, and his self-preservation and love of self did ultimately destroy him.

Finally got to watch the reaction! so great! I think the struggle the audience has to want to feel compassion for SNOW is intentional from the author, Suzanne, as she has stated in an interview and in opening the book that she hopes to inspire discussion on nature vs. nurture debate. So questioning was he just all bad at first? Or was it a series of decisions. I personally don't believe that people are just evil, because then we'd have to imagine he was evil from birth? Or did it start as survival, and then lead to indoctrination (from grandma-am and Gaul) putting fear in him, that was nurtured into his self-importance leading to harm. I feel like people can be self-interested, even jerks, but doesn't make them evil. The actions do. So in the beginning he was looking out for himself, but I think many of us would to survive, however, it's when he started just killing impulsively, or feeling power from slipping through without consequences, that I question if this is what takes someone over that line. In any case, I was looking forward to yalls discussion and you didn't disappoint! One moment that stood out was the scene where Snow loses it in the woods and Mason said, "oh he's in the arena now!" That was awesome because, since I've seen the movie, I know that that was going to be his answer to Gaul later, "Now I know the whole world is an arena..." Loved this reaction y'all!

I'm just now getting to this reaction, and you guys have plenty of comments already so I'm sure it was said, but I can't help myself--I have to give Oak his flowers on this one for being right on the money. I read this book just some weeks before the movie came out, as a die hard Hunger Games fans I knew I wanted to get it read before I saw the movie. Boy did it ruin my first watch. I was extremely disheartened at what was left out. I was glad to do this second watch with you guys now to get a better perspective. After this I now think: it was a great movie, but with everything you get from the books it makes me long for an alternate universe where the movie was split into two. The book was SO long and has SO many extra things. And to come back around to what Oak was saying, the thing that was the most devastating loss from book to movie was that this book was told in first person POV. We got to hear all of Snow's vile and snake-y internal monologing. And boy was there A LOT of it, from the very first chapter. The way he intentionally manipulates everyone and carefully chooses the words he says because he knows it will make a huge difference in how he is perceived and how others proceed in their actions. He even thinks rude and disgusting things about his own family members that you see (his cousin and grandma). He was a snake from day one and the movie lacks some of that due to the nature of it not having his internal thoughts being clearly laid out like you get in the books. To speak towards your questions about why Snow went to 12. Ultimately, he thought he did love Lucy Gray but truly it is concluded that he just wanted control over her like everything else. He wanted to rise back into the good graces of the capital and bring his little trophy songbird with him to have on his arm. I was so so so glad to see this all click with Oak, and really all of you, for the most part. Watching reactions can sometimes be frustrating when reactors don't make the connections very quickly, but that's jsut the nature of things--we don't typically get it all on the first watch, espcailly if there is other source material. Anyways, I'll stop rambling! I enjoyed this so much with you guys. Thank you!

I saw the movie with friends who didn't read the book yet, and it was interesting how not reading the book can change how people watching the movie regard Snow. In the book we are immediately in his head and hear his thoughts - it is clear from the beginning that he is a narcissistic and selfcentered man. However in the third person view of the movie, it comes across very much like a child who grew to be a heartless man due to the cruelty of the world he grew up in. The truth, I'm sure, lies somewhere in the middle. Going from a war to then seeing the Hunger Games every year had to be a highly desensitizing thing to the children of the capitol. It would have, without a doubt, skewed how they valued human life.

Agreed, and that’s why I didn’t like the voiceover at the end. I feel like it was trying to imply it was his relationship with Lucy Gray that made him into the man he would later become. While in reality he was always corrupt, and love had nothing to do with his turn becoming the cruel dictator he would later become.

This was my most anticipated movie of 2023, and it lived up to my expectations, and more! The only thing I didn’t like was the voiceover by Donald Sutherland at the end. I feel like it implies that Snow’s relationship with Lucy Gray, and their subsequent fallout is what lead to him becoming the man he was in the original books/movies. Snow was corrupt, all along, and it wasn’t their relationship that turned him into the man he’d become later on.
Wovey wasn’t explicitly written in the book to have Down Syndrome, they just cast an actress who has Down Syndrome. So I’m not entirely sure if her having Down Syndrome is considered cannon in the movie.
Also Lucy Gray’s fate is meant to be ambiguous. One of the biggest fan theories is that she survived, and is Katniss’ paternal grandmother.

I think the beauty of this story is that it's very much up to our own interpretation in a way regarding whether or not Snow truly loved Lucy or not, what happened to Lucy at the end, if Snow was ever redeemable. My own thoughts, as a book reader, is that I'm on Oaks side. I don't think he or Lucy truly loved each other, I think they were both using each other and sort of gaslit themselves into thinking what they felt that was derived out of survival was actually love. With the ending there are so many question. Was the snake under his mother's veil a trap all along? Was it just there by chance? Did Snow just hallucinate shooting her? Did she get shot and escape? Was she already gone whilst he was having his breakdown? Who knows, but what will always stay with him is her memory and essence, hence why he hates Katniss so much. Snow is such an evil manipulative character but I am on the side of thinking that he could have been redeemable. People may disagree with me, but I think Sejanus' death truly was the nail in the coffin for me. Al throughout the book and movie he seems like a morally gray character, but his role in Sejanus' hanging gives him the final push to the dark side that he really can't come back from. Anyway, I loved this reaction and I loved the movie! Great comments at the end and I'll always appreciate how much effort you guys put into understanding the things you watch on a deeper level :)

I don't think I'm in the group that loved this movie. I decided to finally read the book in time to watch the movie with you guys. So I finished the book right before watching the reaction. I think what was throwing me a little bit off was that the scenes didn't flow well. They were very jumpy to me. I was just enjoying a scene, and then boom, on to the next part. So I wished at certain points it would slow down. (But I get it, they couldn't really make the movie that much longer). The other thing for me was some of the dialogue sounded a bit simplistic/stupid. There's more depth to some of the conversations in the book, and the movie dialgoue made some of the characters sound a bit more empty or stupid. Third thing would be something I don't know how they could have made work anyway, but there's some of Coryos internal dialogue that I wished could be put in the movie somehow. Like maybe make him speak some of it out loud. He had so many fascinating thoughts that I wished the audience could know about to give him even more depth as a character. Though I must say the actor who played Snow was fenomenal. Outstanding really.
Overall I did like the movie. And I'm glad you were able to read into the things I wasn't sure you were going to be able to pick up on. So the movie did a better job than I thought it would from my perspective of it. And for that I'm glad. I will also add that I wasn't a huge fan of the book (It was just a bit slow and a bit poorly written), but I think the story works better on screen. So I'm really glad we got it. I think I'm going to give it some time before I watch the movie again, and see if the movie pacing feels better then.
But yea, I won't say it was a bad movie, because it wasn't. But I definitely hold the trilogy higher than this one. But the characters, acting, costumes and effects in this movie was really really well done. I think I just wanted the characters to be able to show off their depth a little bit more.

Part of the epilogue which I think is poignant:
'She could fly around District 12 all she liked, but she and her mockingjays could never harm him again. Sometimes he would remember a moment of sweetness and almost wished things had ended differently. But it would never have worked out between them, even if he’d stayed. They were simply too different. And he didn’t like love, the way it had made him feel stupid and vulnerable. If he ever married, he’d choose someone incapable of swaying his heart. Someone he hated, even, so they could never manipulate him the way Lucy Gray had. Never make him feel jealous. Or weak. Livia Cardew would be perfect. He imagined the two of them, the president and his first lady, presiding over the Hunger Games a few years from now. He’d continue the Games, of course, when he ruled Panem. People would call him a tyrant, ironfisted and cruel. But at least he would ensure survival for survival’s sake, giving them a chance to evolve. What else could humanity hope for? Really, it should thank him.'

This was the answer Snow actually gave in the book! 'Coriolanus remembered the conversation he’d had with Sejanus as they’d unpacked his duffel. “I’d elaborate on it. They’re not just to punish the districts, they’re part of the eternal war. Each one is its own battle. One we can hold in the palm of our hand, instead of waging a real war that could get
out of our control.” ... “And they’re a reminder of what we did to each other, what we have the potential to do again, because of who we are,” he continued.
“And who are we, did you determine?” she asked.
“Creatures who need the Capitol to survive.”

I'm super impressed with Oak's take. Especially since you haven't read the book. Snow being a snake and self-motivated from the very start can be easy to miss from only watching the movie, but you are right on point. So many people sympathized with Snow after watching this movie, which was disappointing. It's really refreshing to see that someone understands how shitty he really was.

Can any fan explain to me "what the hunger games are for?" Coryo goes on about the whole world being the hunger games and him being the victor. I didn't really get his answer. However highbottom says he made the hunger games by thinking of a form of punishments so severe... on and on. So what is it? What is the real reason. I would assume punishment would be the only real answer, the rest is just drama. Can anyone tell me what it actually is?

The meadow where Snow finds Lucy Gray is the same meadow from the end of Mockingjay where katniss is with her family. So the peace that Lucy Gray was never able to find is the peace that Katniss was able to achieve many decades later

fun fact. Since this is the 10, the following year, Mags Flannagan would win the 11th Games. She was in Catching Fire, Finnicks mentor & she was the first victor to go on a Victory Tour, get a house in Victors Village, & money & riches, all being Snows idea. Also Lucy Gray is mentioned in the very first book as an unnamed Victor of an early game long before Haymitch, Katniss doesnt know if the victor was a boy or a girl. Thats becuz Snow & Dr Gaul erased all the footage of the 10th games cuz it was kind of sloppy ( dead tributes and mentors) but they tried erasing all existence of Lucy Gray, but all the music that she wrote would pass on thru the generations like Hanging Tree & Deep in The Meadow thru her cousin Maude Ivory (who is heavily theorized to be Katniss paternal grandma)

Oak nails it when he mentioned Snow was a self-motivated individual the entire time. In the book, his kindness was face-value. He was an unreliable narrator and saw Lucy Gray as ‘his’- he was extremely possessive, and imo ‘loved’ her in the only way he was capable of as a narcissist, sociopathic type. But it was all for him and his personal reasons, and once he couldn't control her, and when he believed that she wasn't 'in love' with him anymore, he couldn't care less for her in the book.
When Dr. Gaul mentions that all evidence of the 10th hunger games was wiped, he thinks to himself:
'He was glad about the erasure. It was just one more way to eliminate Lucy Gray from the world. The Capitol would forget her, the districts barely knew her, and District 12 had never accepted her as one of their own. In a few years, there would be a vague memory that a girl had once sung in the arena. And then that would be forgotten, too. Good-bye, Lucy Gray, we hardly knew you.'
What annoys me is that some people argue Lucy Gray was just as manipulative as Snow, but seeing as Snow was an unreliable narrator his interpretation of things may not be reality (along with the fact that Snow was evidently much worse) such as believing Lucy Gray was going to betray him etc which was probably not true. He is paranoid people are going to do to him what he would do to others. This is also an important point about why he believes the hunger games reflects real life (imo).
Part 3 was my favourite part, which I see many people bashing because it was ‘too long’ but I thought it was the most interesting and well done part!
I love how Lucy Gray made ‘the hanging tree’ song and it eventually became a rebel song under Katniss…
Thanks for this reaction!

Im so happy oak caught that Coriolanus was never portrayed as the hero of this story, that deep down the audience can tell that he is 100% out for himself and self preservationist in his motives. Im really impressed that a movie was able to portray that feeling because in the book these themes are very clear to the reader but mainly because the story is being told through the eyes of a young snow himself, and you can see the eay he compartmentalises and justifies to himself the decisions he makes, and the reader can see like yeah I understand why you did this thing but your a bit tapped for thinking its ok for whatever reason he gives himself. Very impressed that oak saw this. And the little nod of Coriolanus asking what happens in the song, and Lucy gray says she (lucy) is a fighter and her ending is a mystery, thats a direct parallel to the ending of this movie, the book was the same we actually never find out is lucy dies or not. Theories point to her possibly being a descendant of katniss because of the hints dropped about the root name but its mainly speculation.
One last thing also when oak mentioned about him asking to go see Lucy gray in 12, its very much implied that Coriolanus in the book did indeed do this for his own personal reasons rsther than for lucy, in exile he would rather seek comfort in the knowledge of her survival because of his help and in someone he felt owed him, rather than spend it amongst strangers that owe him nothing. He then switched up quick when he thought he could get to 2 for the officer position and then only when his life was over after killing the majors daughter went back the lucy asking to run away. Until he found the gun and once again his brain told him that she would eventually betray him so he then justifies trying to kill her, yes oak he is indeed 1000% the snake.

I'm so glad you guys enjoyed this movie! I really enjoyed it and thought it was a very faithful adaptation. The cast did an amazing job and the storytelling was amazing! Like you guys mentioned, the books do go into a lot more detail and this one is no different. One thing that stood out to me that the movie didn't delve a whole lot into is detail about how the jabberjays and mockingjays work, especially the mockingjays. The book is all told through Snow's POV and he explains why he hates the mockingjays. I wouldn't have minded seeing that part explored more and it would have made the shooting scene in the forest at the mockingjays more impactful. But I also understand how that would be hard to portray in a movie when pretty much all of it was explained as an internal monologue in the book. But all that is a minor critique. The movie is fantastic and I still highly recommend Hunger Games fans (or anyone) to watch this movie!

Believe it or not, there is a lot of discourse online regarding if Lucy Gray survived or not. The consensus from the novel, (which I have read) is that her fate remains a mystery, and Suzanne Collins wanted it to be left up to interpretation. Some people think he did shoot her and she died from her injuries in the woods (Surprisingly to me, this is the most POPULAR opinion I've seen!). Other people think that she was able to get away from the get-go and what he saw running through the woods + the singing mockingjays were hallucinations as he began to descend into madness. The theories about her escaping revolve around her making it out to District 13 or that she was able to survive in the wild/make it to another country (this is what I believe! - in my opinion). Some people online even believe she is PRESIDENT COIN, which, in my opinion, is too far-fetched... but people really hone in on that theory! I am curious what you guys think! Do you think she lived? Died? In the novel, we can read Coriolanus' thoughts for the entire story. You can see him talk through most of his actions which are mostly for selfish reasons and with little to no empathy. I do believe he cared for Lucy Gray, but mostly because he saw her as his "property," more so than an equal. Additionally, I was blown away by Tom Blythe's performance. I believe he really managed to make Snow such a likeable character at first, and I found myself having more empathy for him on the screen which was something I wish I felt more from book Coriolanus (not that Snow deserves sympathy whatsoever after what he did, but I do like a character with layers and humanity). Once the forest scene happened, I felt a punch in the gut that was not there when I read the book. I LOVED the film as a HUGE Hunger Games snob (both books + movies) Cheers for a great reaction again :)

To be fair I didn’t finish the book yet so I guess I shouldn’t have commented before knowing all the details 💜💜💜

Oak u are 100% correct with your take. Snow wasnt good from the start. He only cared for lucy for his own benefit. Once he found the guns, he decided to go back home. But he knew lucy was the loose end so tried to kill her.Tigris is his cousin

I dont think so. If movie/book 1 ended after the games I think that would have been enough action for the climax. The acting was good enough that they could have handled slowing it down and adding more of the relationships/character building scenes, or even extending the ones in the movie already and letting them breathe more. Book/movie 2 could have been post the games with added rebel action to keep it from being "boring". Serjanus and Snows relationship was more interesting to me than Snow and Lucy, but they cut nearly all of it. You also dont get to know any of the district 12 character in the movie. I will acknowledge that its difficult because the vast majority of the book is an inner dialogue of Snow's, but I would argue that's when you need to include all the character/relationship scenes

I thought this movie was good. But it wasn't an experience like the first movies. Like you know the ending of Snow. So it's hard to get hyped about the story. The guy will become a villian. Compared to Kat. The first hunger games film, you didn't know of violent the movie was going to be if you didn't read the books. Here you expect it. I still get sad thinking about Rue. So I think this is a great movie if it's not compared to the first few. But in comparison it's hard for me to show it the same love. However the breakdown of you guys made me think of some stuff I didn't when I saw it in Cinemas.

Yeah I can see that but I feel like if they did that it might have been a bit boring for book/movie two.

To be fair, I think the book should have been a duology with the events after the games being another one. The movie felt like it glossed over alot of the story. Still enjoyable though

GAH, rewatching with y'all & mason's comment about snow being called rebel twice around 29 minutes in made me remember in one of the mockingjay movies when snow is upset with his assistant calling the people up against the capitol rebels.
