EARLY ACCESS: Coraline FULL REACTION

The story revolves around Coraline Jones, a young girl who moves to a new home with her parents and stumbles upon a hidden, parallel world behind a tiny door in their new apartment. In this "Other World," Coraline discovers a more appealing version of her life, complete with loving, button-eyed parents and endless wonders. However, the enchantment of this parallel world soon gives way to darkness as Coraline realizes that her new parents have sinister intentions and that she must summon incredible courage to save herself and her real parents.

One of the standout features of Coraline is its meticulous stop-motion animation. Every frame of this film is fantastic, with painstaking attention to detail evident in every character, set piece, and creature. The craftsmanship is truly remarkable, creating a unique and mesmerizing visual experience that sets Coraline apart from other animated films.

The characters are brought to life by a talented voice cast, with Dakota Fanning providing the voice of Coraline, and Teri Hatcher and John Hodgman giving fantastic performances as the Other Mother and Father. Their voice acting adds depth and emotion to the characters, making them feel real and relatable.

This also delves into dark and thought-provoking themes. It explores the longing for a better life and the dangers of succumbing to temptation. It also showcases Coraline's growth as a character, as she transforms from a curious and sometimes petulant child into a brave and resourceful young heroine. We would recommend this film if you haven't seen it.

EARLY ACCESS: Coraline FULL REACTION

Comments

This movie (and the book) leaves so much to the imagination. When i first thought of reading the novel, i thought it'd be longer and more full than the movie, but it was the opposite. The movie is mucn more packed and padded than the book is. My favourite wondering point is about the previous victims of Beldam. We see that Coralines parents are a bit absent and disinterested in Coraline because of everything that's going on with the move and their work. This leads her to enjoy the 'Other' world so much because everything is interesting and fun and a hyped up version of the reality. We see that in the end, she rebuffed the other parents and realised the gravity of what they're asking (sowing buttons in her eyes). This makes me wonder about the other children and if their lives were worse or if their parents were cruel or abusive because they let her sow the buttons in the end. Was it Coraline's character and spirit that didn't allow her to be totally fooled by this world or was it that her reality just wasn't as bad as the other children's. What child can be convinced to let someone sow buttons in their eyes, ya know? (Ps its okay Oak, if you dont love it, you dont love it, its cool ❤)

I love that stop-motion is kept relevant because the time, cost and effort it takes should have made it unpopular with studios. This style of films started way back in the late 1800s and has given such classics as the first King Kong films and the Christmas specials of the 1960s such as Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (love the iconic Abdominal Snowman! Remember "Bumbles Bounce!). Also 'Claymation Christmas' when we go a wassailing with the singing 'California Raisins'. So many talented stop-motion artists creating these films. Find and watch a documentary on this and you will be amazed.

But then she went back inside to rescue the lost children and her parents, despite the direct threat to her person. But I guess you just ignored that part.

P.S I think the only problem with the theater scene is the adult perspective and how we sexualize the human body! She wasn’t wearing anything you wouldn’t see at the beach. And thank you guys for reacting! Hope you all are doing good!

Havalyn Freeman

I was really excited when I seen that you guys were going to react to Coraline! I can understand Oaks perspective and others in the comments saying they didn’t/ don’t enjoy this movie! This is one of my favorites in terms of animated films! I would recommend for The Oak to watch it again! I watched this as a kid and I still enjoy it today! I think the message can be both simple and complex! Yes, put simply it warns to be careful what you wish for and the grass isn’t always greener on the other side! If you look into it a bit more it’s extremely relatable for children! And gives some good lessons to heed! Yes, at some point every child feels neglected by their parents whether it be children feel like parents don’t listen to you (which Coraline mentioned a few times), they don’t have time for them, or they don’t care about what they want. And amazingly they convey this perfectly by having the movie told through Coraline’s perspective. Which I think is what captives kids in the beginning cause as a kid you totally feel that. But then everything isn’t what it initially seemed to be (Which I think is another lesson about predators out there in the real world). And then Coraline learns that her parents aren’t bad it was partly (I say partly because they weren’t perfect and some things do fall on them) her perspective! Which is re-enforced by her mother giving her the gloves she wanted, proving that her parents do listen to her and also by them spending quality time with her at the end by helping her garden! Going back to the lesson I mentioned earlier: the movie warns children about people you think mean you good but have bad intentions! And I think the ghost children elude to the fact that unfortunately children do in fact fall victim to that in real life! I could go on and on but I encourage another watch

I agree with Oak, I wasn’t that keen the first time I watched it which was probably around 2009-2010 (whenever the DVD came out) I liked some parts but overall it didn’t really appeal to me, I’m the type of person that likes to rewatch films over and over again (to the point that with my favourite films I will have literally watched them 100s of times) this is only the second time watching Coraline and it's only since I saw that there was a Badd medicine reaction video for it (I love Badd medicine reaction videos and have rewatched a lot of them over and over again lol) I definitely enjoyed Coraline more this time than my first time watching it and might rewatch it again at some point in the future but I still feel like it's not something that I would rewatch a lot. I definitely appreciate the film a lot more than I did the first time since I have a better understanding of the process in which it would have taken and the time and effort the creators put into it.

I watched this movie as a child and I never really cared for it. A lot of people liked it but I thought it was so-so, same with Nightmare before Christmas I never cared for it either as much as other people did. I never watch these movies intentionally. I don’t know what it is but it’s just not that interesting for me to watch again, other than with you guys lol 😅

Honestly, no hate to this movie, but I never got the extreme hype for Coraline. It might be due to the fact that I never watched it as a kid and hold no nostalgia toward it. I finally watched it later as an adult and thought it was fine. I don't mind watching it, but it's not what I pick to watch myself. Since the comments say that not all of you were sold on it, I think I might just watch the youtube cut of this one rather than watching the whole thing. Thanks for trying it out anyways guys! Not every person will like every movie and that's okay. I still appreciate that you guys take the time to listen to your viewers and what they suggest, because movies such as Coraline are still popular for a reason and I think it never hurts to be aware of media that heavily impacts our culture, if that makes sense hahaha.

Jenna

I think Oak especially would really love Cinema Therapy, if he doesn’t watch it already ☺️

Yen Shively

Love Cinema Therapy! Good rec!

Yen Shively

That’s a fair point. I feel the same way but never thought about it.

Bigpawpaw81

Haha I just got HBO Max for the first time! now I can watch all the Harry Potter movies with you guys!

Bigpawpaw81

In fairness, only 1 didn't relate to this one as much as the other 2 did. I feel that's important to mention. 🤙🤙🤙

Badd Medicine

just read the comments NOW IM SAD 😔💔 coco has a much deeper meaning so i hope you guys will like that one much better!

stephanie

you guys did this for me 🙂 LOVE U GUYS gna scream n watch this right now.

stephanie

There’s also a theory of the movie that you can find online, that her parents are dead and she is dealing with their lost by creating this world. You guys should find that and give your thoughts on it.

Whitney Ulerio Duverna

You lack taste

J-Rob

I remember when this movie came out, I seriously got scared from watching it because of the whole button eyes and the Other Mother. We weren't even allowed to watch it in the house because it was so creepy. Rewatching it now, it's not so bad. But it's not one of those Halloween movies I'd like to rewatch every year like The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Seren10

I first saw this movie as a kid, maybe 7. It gave me horrible nightmares. Even now as a 21 year old man, I still sometimes dream about the Other Mother, but I don't wake up crying anymore... so that's good! Clearly it must have traumatized me in some way haha.

Cody Rausch

I remember reading this book in my 6th grade class and surprisingly We were all intrigued and entertained, we actually said if the book was every made into a movie it would definitely be higher rated and horror, then a few years later the movie came out !! With the animation they were able to make it more for kids but still creepy!! I’ve always loved the book and movie!!! coraline always puts me in a good fall/Halloween mood , way to kick October off with this one😁😁

Lily

Coraline is one of my favourite movies since I was a kid. I really really recommend the Pitch Meeting of Coraline, I think a lot of what is said in there goes with what oak was feeling, so I get it... Watching this only as adult somehow hits different, cause is basically a horror movie for kids, If you wanna see why this movie is so beloved watch Therapist Reacts to Coraline from Cinema therapy, they go through about how manipulative people lure you in and why that happens... as a kid i related so much to Coraline and her "bad" parents, but in the end when her attitude changes the environment also did and you discover that they were not bad at all... wich is most of us feel after we grow up lol There is a lot hidden secrets in the movie as well, there's a video called Coraline theory: literally every mystery solved from theorizer that is truly amazing. It would actually be awesome to see you guys react to this videos btw, specifically the first 2 ♡ Loved the reaction, great movie guys.

Jéssica A

Not every movie is for everyone! But I also was worried about Oak because this isn't a message-friendly, happy emotional movie. I love this movie because it's a darker kids movie that's basically a horror mystery and so different. The movie has several easter eggs throughout giving hints as to what this other world really is. Then we get to see this web of lies from the other mother unravel and the attention to detail and creativity in this film is off the charts.

Ivan Rasmussen

Patiently waiting for love and basketball. Hope it’s on next week list at the top😭

Peaches

Also when it comes to stop-motion films I generally don't seem to feel as invested in them emotionally. I think it's just the animation style in alot of them feels slightly detached so I never get quite as invested in them, even if they're enjoyable. If that makes sense? Lol

Sarah

I had a feeling Oak wouldn't enjoy this. The comments seem to confirm it. Lmao 🤭 For me it doesn't really represent anything except learning that maybe the grass isn't as green on the other side as you think. Otherwise I always just enjoyed it because it was weird and I just loved Tim Burton's works. 😆 I never really delved any deeper than that into it. I'd say I do enjoy it less as time passes, like I still enjoy it but I just don't watch it much anymore. This is the first time in awhile since I've seen it. I love seeing reactions to it though because it's so whacky. 🤣🤣

Sarah

Don't feel bad about not liking it Oak. As Lamplighter once said, "different strokes." 😁 That being said, it might help bring things into perspective with this movie if you think back to the old fairy tales. And I mean the OLD ones, not the watered down Disney ones. Mason Quinn was onto something there when he was talking about how this movie didn't really sugarcoat things for the kids. It harkens back to old fairy tales of kids being spirited away by fairies or being lured by witches to be eaten for one purpose or another. We see many reinforcements for this idea in the fact that behind the scenes, the other world isn't as happy as it seemed at face value, something that often happens with faerie glamor. Then there's the seeing stone, also called a hag stone, which was a piece introduce din those same folklores. They were used as charms to ward off evil as well as see through deceptions which is why she could use it to find the eyes. All in all, Coraline is basically an old fairy tale re-told for kids in a modern format. It's always been a favorite of mine, although I don't think it's anything incredible.

Marco Gutierrez

One for Oak, I rec the Cinema Therapy vid on Coraline, if you want to explore the deeper messages. I dont know if links work so apologies in advance if not https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15RhQpLA6HU Great reaction guys!

GillyBean

I really like this movie too but I don't love it, I think it is a bit overrated, I get why it's so beloved and the imagery is amazing but I think my biggest problem with it is actually Coraline herself as a character, I don't really like her, I know she's just a kid but she's just whiny and kinda mean. That's why I much prefer the film Paranorman, I just like Norman more as a protagonist, I root for him more. And I also think they upped the animation and the music is amazing. But again I do like this one as well.

Annie519

Loved the watch along. While I'm sure "They Live" and other works have taken inspiration from various bits of folklore, there wasn't really a direct reference to "They Live." What Coraline uses is called a "hag stone." These are rocks/minerals with a naturally formed hole typically made by water erosion. According to folklore, hag stones are said to bring luck and protection as well as the ability to see the truth behind spells/glamour while looking through the hole.

Elaina

If this were true, then why go back for the ghosts? Or her parents? And her parents were clearly, if not neglecting her, ignoring her - all after moving her away from her home and friends. All while essentially telling her that her whole job is to get out of their way. I get that they're busy and stressed...but c'mon...she's just one kid. They aren't that hard if you just show that you care...at all. It's a story about how she learns to participate in the life she has, rather than just wish things were better without her assistance. If you're looking for a character arc...there it is. She learns to grow up and do things for herself instead of just trying to refuse anything but her own way. She also learns that not everything is as it seems, which is a lesson many adults have a hard time with. 😉 (plus, the end is like a video game, which is fun)

Jessi

I really liked Coraline when it first came out but I think I like it a bit less now that I'm older. I mostly question some of the weird choices with the semi nudity and such. My nieces however are obsessed with this movie. There was a point where they watched it everyday! I think this movie is as close to a horror movie for kids as you can get with a PG rating and that's what really sold them on it.

Chantsy93

Completely. A self-absorbed child is impatient and easily taken in by shallow indulgence until there is a direct threat to her person. *shrug* There is zero character arc.

Jeffri Boisvert

lacks heart? cmon bro..

Crispin

lol same

Crispin

I appreciate you and your thoughts, Oak!!! Full agreement.

Jeffri Boisvert

*shrug* Coraline lacks heart. It focuses on disturbing imagery, but it's ultimately shallow. (Watching it a few times doesn't help. One star from me, then and now. :P)

Jeffri Boisvert

When I first watched this movie, I was in awe with the stock motion animation...this alone was mindblowing, and I appreciated every scene because I always thought about how much work this must have been. And I can remember the very creepy story...but rewatching it now with you also changed my opinion a little bit. I agree that the story and message seem a little bit too made up and confusing. ... maybe that's what the director wanted. But I can totally understand when this movie is not for everyone's taste.

Caroline

Loved this movie its one of my favorite Animated films, you should check out another Halloween film, Tim Burton's Corpse Bride more humour in that one I think you'll enjoy it. Teri Hatcher and Keith David were my favorite voice actors in this, The other mother is quite terrifying.

Alex Turnbull

To be fair, this story didn't resonate with one individual.. 👍😁

Badd Medicine

I've read Coraline and watched it too many times to count but I never notice how good the imagery was in the movie until yall were pointing. Some of it was crazy!! Loved the reaction and review!

Dy'Nasha

I didn't get that they didn't like it. Love and Thunder was one they didn't like, but this one was more ambivalent.

Money-Kate Olsen

This was the first movie I saw in 3D in the theatre. Terrifying. I literally yelped when the needle in the opening came off the screen, lol.

Jeffri Boisvert

Oh! You didn't need to do that! If they didn't like it, they didn't like it. Not your fault! It's actually nice to know that up-front rather than get settled and realize it halfway through. :)

Jessi

Deleted my comment, sorry D:

Daniel Silva

Excited to see y'alls reactions, me and my little sister are going to watch together.

Bri

Mistake. I read the comments before I watched the reaction and now I'm too bummed to watch it. 🫤

Jessi

I came away from this movie with a similar feeling as Oak. The goth kid in me really wanted to like this, but it felt a little cold and distant somehow. I feel like Neil Gaiman (the book author) has really imaginative ideas, but sometimes his stories lack heart for me. If you guys do another stop motion, I hope you check out 'Kubo and The Two Strings'. It has Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, and packs a big emotional punch.

JessTellsTales

Apropos of nothing, but I love the blurbs you write for each film/episode. I wasn't interested in rewatching Coraline (saw it once when it came out and never since) but y'all really sold it 😂
