EARLY RELEASE: YT CUT Barbie

I went into Barbie thinking it was maybe going to be like Elf but with Barbie exploring the human world for the whole movie. I knew obviously that this wasn't targeted towards me. It did have some really fun stuff especially the beginning 30 minutes. Personally, I didn't like it all that much but I can see where people would love it and really connect with it and empower them. But happy it did well and really happy for Margot too. She's amazing in everything she does!

maybe i’m ignorant saying it but there is nothing more meta than people hating on this movie for the same reason it was made for and is about. so many people really missed the mark in understanding the concept.

Wrong comment section. Ha

Yeah it’s a big deal. This show is considered one of the big 3 along with Naruto, and Dragon Ball. There’s been some to come close but this one has been consistent. I hope you guys start looking into some Anime MOVIES. Maybe starting with Akira or maybe Princess Mononoke.

Troy

Actually thats a lie I saw LaLa Land. Its been awhile though I forgot lol 🀣

Was looking forward to your reaction and glad you mostly came into it with an open mind. I thought the film was phenomenal and I thoroughly enjoyed it (as did the group of girl friends I saw it with in theaters). My mom cried when she saw it. Maybe seeing it as a woman is a fundamentally different experience? At least it was for me (not speaking for all women). I think everyone can enjoy it though. I don’t know if Oak realized the parallel when he started saying how he has a sister and nieces and stuff (around 1:01:40), compared to the boardroom scene when Will Ferrell said he was the son of a mother…but I thought it was funny. Glad you got all of the movie references (I’d expect nothing less) and that you appreciated the set design. I loved the performances of Margot Robbie, America Ferrera, and Ryan Gosling. I do think Margot’s acting was the best in the film because it was the more difficult part. It’s not as obvious as Gosling’s but was more challenging, imo. I thought he still did a great job though. I also think the film did a good job of criticizing the impact that patriarchy has on BOTH men and women. That’s why he had the β€œI am Kenough” sweatshirt at the end and a part of why he had the breakdown. Patriarchy put too much pressure on him too. Don’t know if Oak picked up on that as much given his criticism, but was glad Mason Quinn pointed it out at the end. Obviously the focus was on the impact of patriarchy on women, but like…it’s Barbie….hahah. Overall another solid reaction and really appreciate you all sitting down to watch it.

Abby

i only really watched this movie for ryan gosling lol

stephanie

Ken not apologizing among other details of his behavior were literally the point of the movie, imo. Just more, subtle commentary on gender and patriarchy.

Jenna

Omg you guys should definitely watch the godfather for the channel at some point. I’ve seen it so many times. The book is amazing too.

Sierra Smith

His range as an actor is amazing.

I think you're right on all points, these movies were an event for multiple reasons. Personally I've never cared one ounce about budget when choosing a film to watch, dollars doesn't automatically equal quality. And I do think there is a degree of burnout from big franchises like MCU, people were craving something standalone and original. Also, I saw Oppenheimer first, and it was amazing walking past a crowd of people ALL wearing pink. Pink tees, pink dresses, pink hijabs, pink heels. I've never seen an audience like that before πŸ˜‚ Was kinda jealous nobody in my crowd got kitted up for Oppy πŸ˜‚

I think a lot of people are thinking about the hype this movie generated in the wrong way. When it was in the theaters, people didn't go to see it because it was a one billion dollar movie or because it would be the movie of the century but because the marketing, the Barbenheimer viral memes and the cast were attracting to people. Plus, there was the trend of dressing in pink for Barbie (and in black for Oppenheimer) so it was a super fun experience in the theaters. Then, people kept on coming partly because it was a fairly original movie, which wasn't a sequel or a remake of anything, with amazing costume and set design. So the hype was because of all of that and not just because of the movie in itself or its story, which are nothing exceptional. At the end of the day, it was just a really amazing theater experience and a movie that a lot of women (and men to an extent) can relate to, and I had a great time watching it with other people, even though the movie didn't meet my expectations.

The only thing I really liked about this movie was the costume and set design. (And Ryan Gosling)

Pretty sad when a kids' movie which basically boils down to "everybody should feel comfortable just being themselves instead of obsessing over how others perceive them" (y'know, a message which has been around for decades) is seen as extremely political, lol...

Verity

oppenheimer was 80% politics but was somehow less political than barbie XD poor kids this movie was like a parody of modern day woke hollywood lol

MateoP

Some of my problems was I really didn't think it was that funny when it was obviously suppose to be. I didn't laugh very much. And also I didn't really like Barbie most of the time, I didn't like how she treated Ken in the beginning, I didn't like when she cried about how "ugly" she was, it just bothered me for some reason. And honestly I was on the Ken's side most of the time, I really didn't care if the Barbie's won. And like you I thought the messages was hammered in. I know a lot of people love America's big speech but man I thought it was so forced, lol.

Annie519

I felt the same too, I didn't really "get" all the hype and some parts did make me cringe. But on the other hand, I can see why other people would love it, and there were laugh-out-loud moments especially from Ken. Margot and Ryan were born to play these roles, LOL.

Verity

Wow really enjoyed this reaction! I think I went into it similarly to you guys - kinda like "what's the hype about"? Similar to the Oak, I loved some things about the movie and was disappointed by others. I think for a movie that's supposed to be a "women's movie", it was a little black and white at times. I'm surprised they didn't go with stronger messages which had more nuance, and moreso just the tried and true and popular messages. I also thought they "tell instead of show" too much in the movie, it felt like being preached at. I was also disappointed they played Ken's crying for laughs and also that he never apologized. I gave it a 3.5 for entertainment value and for being a step in the right direction of having women's stories being told on the big screen to a mainstream audience, kind of like Crazy Rich Asians was a step in the right direction of having more mainstream representation of East Asians. In the end though, I think I expected more for a billion dollar movie, but I'm also glad such a movie got such mainstream recognition. Lots of conflicting feelings for me. Thank you guys for talking about things you didn't like as much without being overly negative! I always enjoy the Oak's deep thoughts, Mason Quinn's positivity, and the Answer's cynicism. Nice introduction to Dave for me too.
