EARLY ACCESS: Gravity FULL REACTION

What a film this was! Sandra Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant but inexperienced astronaut who finds herself marooned in space after a catastrophic accident during a routine mission. George Clooney is the charismatic veteran astronaut, Matt Kowalski, who provides both a calming presence and a touch of humor amidst the chaos.

One of the film's best achievements is its visual prowess. It takes us right alongside the characters, immersing us in the terrifying expanse of space. The breathtaking long takes create a sense of weightlessness, emphasizing the isolation and vulnerability of the characters. The cinematography is nothing short of astonishing.

Bullock delivers one hell of a performance, battling not only the unforgiving environment of space but also her inner demons. Her character's journey from fear to determination is both compelling and relatable. Clooney provides a charming and charismatic foil to Bullock's vulnerability. The film's minimalistic score, complements the tension perfectly, enhancing the emotional depth of the story.

This film explores themes of resilience, the human spirit, and the will to survive in the face of insurmountable odds. Some could argue that the plot is simple, its brilliance lies in its simplicity. It allows the characters and their dire circumstances to take center stage, making for an intensely visceral experience.

It's a heart-pounding thriller, a visual treat, and an emotional journey all in one. If you haven't seen it, highly recommend watching it. This was great!

I saw this movie in the theater and it was an amazingly cathartic experience. As you guys said, she starts out just a woman buried in her work, driving around at $5 a gallon (she’s an engineer, she can afford it) for hours on end. She has not been living since the death of her daughter. She’s just been existing. Then, when it comes down to it, even though Clooney was her imagination, it was her higher self telling her to, in the words of an old con, “get busy living, or get busy dying”. She has the epiphany that if she gets the chance, she chooses to start showing up and live again. If she doesn’t make it, “no harm, no foul.” Making peace with death can be a lot easier than showing up and living your best life. Watching her stumble on the sand at the end, like a child learning to walk, looking around in wonder. To me, this movie was about truly living instead of existing. In my case, to finally begin to thrive after decades of working to just survive. It was, and is, a very powerful movie to watch. Right in the feels.

I love yall reacting to this one.. I saw this in imax when it came out and I was exhausted at the end. I felt like I had hiked for 90 minutes. The movie triggered my fear of heights so my heart rate was elevated and my palms were sweaty the whole movie. Might be the only movie I have literally seen on the edge of my seat. It was nice to see yall as invested as I was in the movie.

Mariah Lovegood

Saw this in Imax the first time i saw it, jaw dropping. That opening 20 minute long one shot is just incredible

I used HBOMax as well - the time stamps didn't quite match up, but I had no issues w play speed. Is it a country thing? I'm in the US.

Stef Furness

yeah this is a known issue with HBO stuff (streaming service is called Binge here in Australia). Someone did the maths and its something like a couple percent increase in playback speed for some silly reason. Can't do anything about it until HBO decides to do something unfortunately.

Wulfbaine

I haven't seen this one since it released. Just got the DVD out and about to start!

Sarah

We have seen HBO's encoder is different. Wish it wasn't.

I'm trying to watch along on (HBO) Max, but it seems Max's version of the movie is somehow sped up compared to the Amazon Prime rental you guys watched. Every minute or so I have to briefly pause the movie for you guys to catch up. I tried speeding up your video to 1.05x but then that made your side too fast compared to Max. It's a shame this is happening with this particular movie, because the best thing about is the atmosphere (no pun intended) and this kept pulling me out it every time you laughed or reacted 1s before/after what i was seeing.

I saw this at the theater and it was incredible on the big screen! You really feel the anxiety and the isolation. The sound design was so good, I always love when it will just go completely quiet, it really throws you off when it does. Sandra Bullock was amazing in this, she was nominated for an Oscar I believe and I honestly think she was robbed from it here. It must not be easy to act by yourself for the majority of the film and not having very many people to work off with. There isn't that many actors that can pull off being the only one in the film and she did it very well. When I saw it I was so shocked that George left pretty quickly, of course he was charming but they had good chemistry together and I like him being her conscience there, I had a feeling he was just in her head and it makes sense that she would start having hallucinations and such, so it didn't feel out of place or anything. For me this movie reminds me a lot of Cast Away, not necessarily the themes but by following an actor all by himself and just doing anything to survive.

All I could think about during the fire extinguisher scene was Wall-E lol

Lena

Thank you so much for doing this one! I think it’s incredible in so many ways. The visuals and sound design are breathtaking. But above it all, I just love the story. That fight to survive is told so well and made all the more powerful by its purity. Like you said, they didn’t make it about living for somebody else. It was just the will to live. When she makes it to earth, it’s great. But when she struggles to stand because of the gravity, it’s chef’s kiss! It’s hard to explain, but just that scene of her pushing her way up in the mud and starting to walk is the one visual out of the movie that really stuck with me. Pretty incredible when you consider the amazing visuals of the earth throughout. Kudos to Sandra Bullock!

Love this movie! My second time watching. You must check out "Pans Labyrinth", one of my all-time fav movies. It's directed by Guillermo del Toro and co-produced by Alfonso Cuaron.

I saw this in the theater which I usually never go. As a former NASA contractor here in Houston & a friend of mine her husband is an astronaut & he went multiple times. 4 space walks to fix something & I have about 6 vhs tapes of it recorded. It was absolutely nerve wracking when Jim did those & he wasn’t even my husband but someone I’ve had family gatherings with made it all the more terrifying when he was up there. So I went to the theatre for this movie only. They actually grow taller in space the longer they are there because the spine loosens up & stretches!! So when they arrive home it’s extremely painful & it takes a long time to revert to their original height. When I left the theater I got up & felt SO SO HEAVY. I weigh 86 pounds & I’m 55 now but weight stayed the same. But I did feel extremely exhausted & very heavy walking out. I felt just like I did watching Jim in real life but worse because the movie had catastrophes that made it so much more intense. Thank you guys so very much for doing this one!!! Much love from Houston!!!!

Cathy Bailey

I saw this movie in theaters in 3D which was pretty cool

Mariah

And I’m not saying it’s a bad movie, it’s a very enjoyable movie. It’s just me nitpicking. I wouldn’t have given it a 5/5. Still a great movie.

Trey

I do disagree with that. Human controlled thrusters are insanely hard to control. You will spin in circles. Fire extinguishers have about 3kg of CO2 in them to eject with, which will give about 5m/s to a person in 0G. Sure the movie shows newton’s third law, but that’s about it. The realism of that scene is out of the question.

Trey

Neil specifically called the fire extinguisher scene 'great' in the 'Insider Business' interview. Sounds like you disagree with him too. People seem to think he didn't like the movie because of a few valid criticisms. He has said he 'enjoyed the movie immensely' and he celebrates the movie's 'effort to get so much right'.

alexray

Really liked this reaction by you guys, watching this in the cinema was something else at the time. Good to see you guys reacting to the tension and situations that happened throughout

Quilva

I think this is the first one i disagree with you guys on. Maybe it’s just because I love physics. Technically, it’s a great movie. I saw it in IMAX and it was outstanding. Cinematography 10/10. The first 12 minutes is one continuous shot! Rewatching it though, the drama of the movie is a bit much (fire extinguisher as an E.V.A. system lol). Not sure if you guys are interested in the science of the film, but if you are I’d recommend looking at Neil DeGrasse’s debunking of it. Nevertheless, loved watching it with you guys as always!

Trey

Watched this in theatres when it came out. The anxiety that was induced haha. Mason Quinn hit it on the head when he mentioned the shot of her inside the ship and it resembled her being a baby inside the womb. The whole movie is a big metaphor for deciding to live life despite things going wrong. Instant classic.

Ron Banks

Holy crap. I was entertained but what a ridiculous movie. Ryan Stone needs to buy some lottery tickets before doing anything else hahahaha

Liam

😂

Watching this while I get ready for work is NOT it, giving me too much anxiety I keep pausing what I'm doing lmao

Jorreca

My local cinema will be screening it next month, which I'm so excited about because I never got to see it on the big screen

Verity

It was really good!

Aaargh I'm at work and can't watch yet...I'm so happy it sounds like you enjoyed it. It's true the plot is simple, but I like that about it - just like Fury Road, the simple and straightforward story gives the set-pieces and characters room to breathe.

Verity

This movie has a second name. Its called Anxiety 🫠

Ryan Bellefleur

I’m so excited to rewatch this movie tonight.
