EARLY ACCESS: One Piece 1x1 FULL REACTION
Added 2023-09-06 22:45:48 +0000 UTCGreetings, everyone! It's time for One Piece. Just to be transparent, our schedule was already quite full when we decided to include this series. As for the release of our full reactions, we're taking a bit of a random approach. We'll kick things off by sharing the first two reactions, and then it'll be one at a time from there. You can expect these drops at least once a week.
As for this series, we know zero about it and thought it was quite entertaining. Admittedly, some of the CGI, like the tumble out the window, shows room for improvement, but it's understandable, considering the challenges of bringing a manga/anime to live-action. We are excited to learn more about these characters. So far a fun first episode.

It makes a lot of sense in a world of semi-isolated island civilizations with drastically different climates and available resources with low potential for establishing regular trades beyond local regions that technological elements are a piecemeal hobnob, and consistent with how different ancient civs here in the real world developed equivalent technologies in different orders depending on their needs and resources.

(I see people make this argument on reddit all the time - statements like "One Piece isn't the modern day" when someone is trying to half-ass an argument about how "this is how things were back then." Except, One Piece has real-world equivalencies to its medical and science technology, as well as futuristically advanced technologies of the sort that you'd find in any sci-fi film from Blade Runner to an MCU movie, that serendipitously exist alongside nonsensical fantasy elements like snail-based communications tech and pure magic. It's such a hodgepodge of fantasy and historical anachronism that you can't credibly mount any kind of argument that makes It an analogue to either a historical OR present-day settings.

One thing I did notice that I wish they would offer to new viewers. The scene where Zoro eats the smashed rice ball off the floor speaks volumes about his character, but ONLY extreme diehards of the manga are going to know exactly how much it conveys: Zoro HATES chocolate - but only people who read the extra-canonical trivia that Oda offers to fans asking questions, will know that. It would be nice if that kind of subtle characterization was offered through the core narrative.

Especially watching the way you guys react to Luffy's whole shtick, like the way Answer was laughing at the way he just openly smiles about everything. Y'all would LOVE the anime just so much. Luffy's entire thing is about pursuing your dreams at all costs, and he is the personification of childlike wonder and optimism.

Have to say the concept of willingly suspending belief NEEDS to be allowed when viewing any fictional adaption or original piece BECAUSE it will only lessen the viewing experience if you require everything to be realistic or relatable to what you already know. Allow the author to create worlds that can expand our imagination and help us grow as well. Iβm looking forward to more of the One Piece world building. I took time to view S1 E1 of the anime to see if the live action was the sameβ¦. It pretty much follows it, which is great. I donβt care for some anime animation but this real world version and adaption is better to me as a vehicle for the anime original story because the writing is great! Iβm going to enjoy this series.

2023-09-07 18:49:36 +0000 UTCMy favorite story of all time (for like 15 years now), got back on the patreon for it, I love your reactions, thank you so much for fitting it in!! As a fan I'm very happy with how well they followed the source material and the pacing! It is technically adapting the manga, not the anime- so that already results in better pacing. The way One Piece arcs are established I think will work very well for seasons, I believe 6 seasons could cover around 500-600 chapters/episodes of the original with good pacing. The world building and characters all weaving together makes for such an epic story, I'm so excited the live action is able to grab people who are un-able to invest time in the manga or anime because the story is so good everyone deserves to know it!!

I honestly thought you guys would pick it up in a few months time! I don't mind waiting either haha, One Piece fans have to be patient afterall due to the amount of mysteries and the wait for the payoffs (though the payoffs are incredible). I'm glad you guys had fun. Nothing captures adventure as well as One Piece, in my opinion. To me, One Piece is the greatest piece of fiction of all time.

Baseball style cap *are* a common part of the Marine rank and file uniform and sneakers are pretty fair play for the level of anachronism built into this bizarre and fantastical world and if save budget they can use on sets and iconic characterization then so be it. Radios weren't a thing in the height of the real world pirate era either, let alone built in to monstrous snail shells like they are in this very much not Earth.

2023-09-07 00:58:59 +0000 UTCThis was so much fun ! I literally finished the 8th episode yesterday, and I'm starting over with you. This first one was such a fun ride! My boyfriend is a huge One Piece fan and we have been watching the anime for the past 4 years. I'm not really into anime, but this one is cute in its own way. My boyfriend tells me is that the real star of One Piece is the written Manga. It's the second most popular and sold comic book series (between Superman and Batman) They overstretch the anime to the max so that they don't go faster than the manga (like in Game of Thrones). So they stretch out never-ending battles and add many, many, many flashbacks to the point where we're like "do they think we're stupid or what, it's the fifth time we see this flashback". In the current arc we're watching, the battle lasts for more than 80 episodes.... this is way too long for me, as I love character development, not battles! So, for me, the live action is better, or at least, a very, very interesting and fun add-on that makes me smile (and shed a tear or two)! They kept the names, the backstory, they added a couple of interesting things from what I can remember. This live action is a definite win for me :)

Well, we just finished the first two episodes and will watch the next two next week! And now I get to re-watch the first two episodes with you guys while I wait~ I'm so excited!! π Just yesterday when I watched your Brave reaction I thought: it would be so cool if you guys started with One Piece (the Anime) but I know it's A LOOOT bc there are so many episodes π Didn't even think abt the Netflix series yesterday! 2023-09-06 23:57:03 +0000 UTCThis show seems to be mixed with fans of one-piece (original anime). Luffy is the perfect casting. I would say this show is more serious and adult than the anime. The anime is more ridiculous and almost childish in the beginning. It's like Atla in how it changes later on, but I think this show looks to be a good adaptation. It is slightly different, but they did the characters and anime justice. You guys also mentioned that you were surprised you hadn't heard of it before. This live-action adaptation just came out not even a week ago. The names, for the most part, are spot on, and the actors made a video telling people how to pronounce the names right.
