I know this is a year old, to note Aang also never exactly grew up with parents. He grew up with the air nomads and made it to 12 before being thrown into the war. Toph, Katara and Sokka, and Zuko all had parents or parental figures. Him knowing how to be a great parent from that alone would be rocky, not even including the knowledge that he had the world on his shoulders and the fate of his people's culture. Not an excuse for his parenting, but a reasonable understanding on its own.
