There was actually an extended intro where it explained more about the different holiday worlds, as well as an epilogue voiceover about what happened to Jack and Sally. Both were cut completely, or in the case of the intro were significantly reduced before "This is Halloween" begins. They were both also supposed to be voiced by Patrick Stewart - but you can still hear the full extended intro and the cut epilogue on the official soundtrack.

That's what the comments are for! Glad you got all your thoughts out! Great stuff and agreed on Jack!

To me, this movie, which I've loved and cherished since I first saw it, is about being unhappy and bored. Jack is the King of Halloween, that's all he's ever done, and he's perfect at it! But that's all there is in his life, and he's run out of enthusiasm, joy, and inspiration. As a result he doesn't see what's happening around him, i.e. Sally being badly treated, or her being in love with him. As with many of us, his sadness and anguish make him rather self focused. Then he finds Christmas, the most colorful, bright, glitter, and warm holiday there is. It's new, it's different! It's like nothing he's ever seen before, and his first thought is to share it, then to take it for himself as he's not been this inspired and joyful in a very long time. He never stops to realize that he can't be Santa because he's JACK SKELLINGTON! In the end, you can't be someone you're not, no matter how much you want to be, and the happiness you gain is worthless if it hurts others. Being shot down is literal here, he tried and failed. But he learned! He knows now that he's the Pumpkin King, and that trying to be someone else won't solve his problems or fix them. But his exposure to something new, and even failing to steal it, has broadened his mind, given him new vision and inspiration, and forced him to look outside himself, where he finally sees his value to others, and sees who cares for him most. Overall, to me, it's about Jack getting to grow, expand his mind and vision, and see inspiration in everything around him. And maybe also to sneak off to other holidays to enjoy them, lol!! Ouch, this was long winded! Hope it makes sense!

The Movies That Made Us on Netflix breaks down some great behind the scenes about this movie. Great job, guys! Had a blast re-watching this with y’all 🤘

Movie Suggestion: Aladdin (2019). I heard the Answer saying It was one of his favorite Disney movies, and I think everyone would like the remake (which in my opinion was better the original!) Also can't wait for the Polar Express tmrw

I did hear this was based on a poem. And I mean, that's fair to want some credit but Tim Burton is a big name, they probably used it for the promotion of the movie.

Miss_CJ

One of my top 10 favorite movies!! It’s a classic, and never gets old ❤️

Manny D.

Tim Burton wrote the poem that the story is based on, but he didn't have any say in the movie. It was the director, Henry Selick, the story writer Caroline Thompson, etc. Henry Selick apparently hates that Tim Burton gets the credit lol

Trying to wrap my head around your much work went into this considering the tech they had them. Gotta imagine it wasn't easy.

Boogie terrified me as a kid until I was about 10 or 11 lol but this is a classic for me that I definitely go back & watch & also love the style of. I know it's a niche, but I really do enjoy it!

Jack's World

I am with Oak that this movie never appealed to me in the least to watch it. I watched it before your review in anticipation of your review and I would say it’s still not my style of movie, but it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. You mentioned the voice of Sally also played the mom in Home Alone. She was also in Beetlejuice. I like that Answer pointed out the Disney intro is not the one that would have preceded the movie in 1993.

Ginger

I like all of your interpretations - Mason's interpretation of Sally as having her happiness caged by the Doctor's actions, Oak's interpretation of Jack as trying to find happiness, and Answer's interpretation of Jack as being not able to understand some others. Tim Burton's visual aesthetic is often contrary to societal norms, and his stories also often depict main characters who are contrary to societal norms. I too, interpret caging, happiness, and not-understanding as main themes of the movie - for me, I see Jack as a man who experiences an awakening of childhood-like abundance of enthusiasm to search for un-explored happiness, beyond what society allows ( society generally not allow holiday activity cross-overs ). When Jack tries to explore his newly-discovered feelings and happiness, and ventures beyond his permitted societal role, he finds that he cannot undertand things that are different from what he has been molded into. He cannot help but fail despite his best efforts, has his attempt literally shot-down, gets scolded by Santa ( a father-like figure ) to stay within his societal role, and so suffers being caged in this way. Despite that, I'm glad to see that Jack does find some happiness in Halloween Town!

This movie will always be associated with the Halloween holiday as opposed to the Christmas holiday for me personally. We'd always watch it after trick-or-treating while my brother and I sorted out our candy. I have a lot of nostalgia for it, but I've found a little bit of its magic has been lost watching it now as an adult (I hadn't seen it for years). I still appreciate the movie's artistry and unconsciously sang along to every word in 'This is Halloween' (If I could reclaim all of the space in my brain that's storing random music lyrics I'd be a genius). It was a trip down memory lane watching it again with you guys. As for a 'Christmas movie' though, I'd love it if Klaus (2019) was added to the poll for next year. It's gone into rotation with the other classics that are always on in the background during the holidays at our house (along with Home Alone, Die Hard, National Lampoon, Harry Potter, The Peanuts x-mas movie, etc.). Love the channel and thanks for the thoughtful reviews guys. Looking forward to hate-watching the Twilight series with you all. Happy Holidays everyone!

I have to agree with Mason Quinn on this one. I also think more traditional story telling would've been nice. I'm personally not all that into musical to begin with so this movie has never been in my top list of movies to watch but the animation is great, Tim Burton has a very recognizable style that I love. I especially loved 'The Corpse Bride' and 'Coraline'.

Miss_CJ

The best thing of the movie (and it‘s great) is the music and the best cover ever is https://youtu.be/EbxkOntz2SA - oogie boogie song by voiceplay! I can only recommend it! Thanks a lot from Germany and Merry Christmas / Frohe Weihnachten und ein Frohes Neues Jahr!

Patiences indeed!

Badd Medicine

I imagine it's an exercise in patience. That's why I've always loved claymation. It's just total dedication and patience to the vision you have. There's so many easier ways of animating things, especially nowadays, that to sit there and just make minute movements in clay dioramas to create each frame is mind boggling and impressive.

I wonder how hard that work was given the technology then?

Badd Medicine

I'm glad you guys enjoyed this one. Growing up at the time when this was a popular movie, I personally never saw why everyone liked it much and my opinion hasn't changed much. I only decided to watch it because this movie featured in the Kingdom Hearts game series so I wanted to see what it was about. That being said, I've always loved claymation and similar animation styles and I'm glad you guys appreciated that aspect of this movie too. If you want to see a true masterpiece of claymation, I suggest you watch Coraline if you haven't yet. Absolutely amazing movie.

Jason Bourne is in the plans.

Badd Medicine

I know it isn’t a holiday movie, but the Jason Bourne series is good if y’all haven’t seen it.
