The staff at this time were hired as "editors" - whether writers or video content producers - and they had a creators program where staff could either pitch shows or they were scouted to star in them. They'd have to sign over their instagrams and Buzzfeed became almost an agency model for these people, taking a cut for their branded content. I'm sure it was in response to kids getting well known through being full time Buzzfeed staff, and then leaving the company to produce their own content on Youtube etc. It became a way for the company to own their personal brands so they couldn't just leave
