With the color added, the mood of this painting ends up being a lot more clear. It was probably possible to pull together the appearance of dusk in black and white, but I always get nervous about taking things too far in the value phase. When things get too tight too quickly, I start to feel restricted about making changes and adjustments that serve the work as I move closer to the final. Staying as loose as I can justify, for as long as I can keeps me making incremental improvements before I get bogged down in details.
