Did They Really Bring Back the Dire Wolf...??

I think this topic ties to, in a really interesting way, Connor’s story once about how (my words, not his) the UGA line of bulldogs simply should not exist. Raises the artificial selection point as it relates to “playing God”. I think this technology has potential to be really good, but equally as much, if not greater potential for harm. Fascinating, exciting, a little scary.

2025-05-05 16:51:51 +0000 UTCWhile I'm cautiously optimistic that this research/technology will be a net positive, love seeing so much more conversations around animals! I'd certainly dig more of the deep dive format, too!

2025-05-01 21:35:42 +0000 UTCI've been teaching a molecular biology class this semester and for a discussion book we read "How to Clone a mammoth" by Beth Shapiro, who now works at Colossal. I had no idea just how much extra discussions we would be having with the dire wolf announcement! It's come up in every class in teach and among my friends and colleagues. No matter how you feel about this work, they definitely generated discussion with their marketing! In a different class we discuss public/private funding of science and this definitely came up regarding how we think this may have gone if mostly publicly funded.
