Its status had been unusual and contested from the beginning, but with a new President on the scene, refusing to honour old bargains and urging total control of the territory, a new showdown between London and Washington seemed inevitable. But just how far would Aberdeen be willing to go for lands far outside the imagination of the British public? For national honour, he was willing to go very far indeed...
