Dear Patrons, I need your help...
Added 2018-04-20 00:49:42 +0000 UTCLONG-ISH READ AHEAD.
Within this update I drop some good news on you guys, some meh news, and some bad news. Hopefully a good portion of you guys will see this, but if not, I will be releasing a State of the Podcast Address because there's been a few developments recently that I need to get off my chest. Look at me being all dramatic - everything is grand really, but I have to get real about some stuff and I'm not entirely sure how you guys are going to react.
First of all, I need to come clean about something I've been sitting on for a while. On 23rd May 2018, I planned to release a Thirty Years War Podcast, which will bring that conflict to you guys on a new, exciting level like never before. Trust me, you're going to love it, and you're also going to love the book that goes along with it! I choose the 23rd May because it's on that date that, 400 years ago, the Defenestration of Prague happened, and the Thirty Years War began.
This is obviously really exciting, but note that I said planned, rather than plan. You see the good news is that I will be releasing the Thirty Years War. The less exciting news is that I won't be releasing it as a separate podcast, but in the WDF feed. Every week, alongside the Korean War, in other words, you'll be able to access a new episode of the Thirty Years War, and you won't have to track down a new feed, and I won't have to stress about its low downloads.
This latter point was brought home to me recently when I realised just how difficult promoting 1956 as a separate podcast feed was. Hopefully, this sounds not too terrible to you guys - I know the idea of a new show is aesthetically pleasing, and trust me my OCD senses will be tingling, but at least the content will all be one in one place, and I should add that for you Patrons at the $5 or above, you will be getting all this content in your Patrons feed anyway!
My second point is where things get a little less happy. As you know, Poland Is Not Yet Lost has been in the pipeline for several months. After really talking it over with the wife and properly considering my options though, I think that I will have to postpone the release of Poland until 18th May NEXT YEAR. By that point, the Thirty Years War series will be winding down, after about fifty episodes, and you'll probably be ready for something new.
I should add as well that yes, this meant that my original plan was to release TWO new history podcasts within a week of one another, and somehow expect to juggle the responsibilities of these projects and the regular show AND the Xtra feed AND the stress of trying to get a new job. It was just far too much to take on, and this isn't even talking about the efforts I'm making in blogging and to make WDF's social media better, as well as getting those books written and running a constantly available customer service for listeners.
I have a long habit of taking on too much, but it was only when I considered exactly what I was getting into, and how much I would have to do, and how stuck I would be in this position from late May, that I started to feel a gradually creeping sense of stress build up. Yet, because I had announced Poland so many times, in so many spheres, it was simply impossible to postpone it for a year. That was crazy - my listeners would go nuts, I told my wife, and nobody would trust me at my word.
Anna then made the very reasonable point that you guys would surely rather have me as I am than watch me run myself into the ground with overworking. But then, I should be completely honest and say that I don't like this, and I think it sucks. I don't like not starting a new feed for the Thirty Years War, and I don't like postponing Poland. I told so many of you, even my parents, about Poland because I was so excited about it, and I still am, I want to share it with you guys now, and I want to do so many other things too...
But I have to be realistic. For crying out loud, I would be committing myself to three full-time podcasts, and even while I've done a great deal of legwork, that is still an incredibly stuffed schedule considering this isn't even a full time job!
There was also the emotional and psychological aspects of the strain. I started to become more irritable, less patient, less fun to be around, and more glued to my PC than ever before. I was still belting out quality content, but I wasn't enjoying myself because there was no feeling of 'ahhhh, that's done, let's have a rest now'. At one point I wrote two 12 page scripts in a day, recorded two episodes and was in the middle of editing one of them when I just got this blinding headache, and I asked myself 'what am I doing?'
It later became an important practical question to ask as well, because in a sense that by May 2019 I will know whether or not Cambridge is a go, I want to have sufficient content ready to release to you all while I'm away, however long that all takes. By saving Poland till next year, I will be ensuring that you're all kept fed and watered, and that you won't miss me too much!
So I am genuinely sorry about Poland being postponed. I hate postponing things and not following through on commitments, and I really hate letting you guys down. I wish I didn't have to, but the bare facts are that I just cannot sustain this level of insane productivity if I want to still love history podcasting. That's something I never thought I'd say, but I have since lightened up my schedule a little bit, and I feel much better since. I won't be able to get as much done as before, but Poland is no longer hanging over me as it was, and I can focus instead on the much more manageable Thirty Years War.
I would also wager that you guys would enjoy Poland more when it's released in a less crowded scene. I at least know that I will enjoy myself more making it, and that is a large part of the battle. My motivation and energies are returning, and I feel so much more on top of things than I did a week ago. I have to thank you all again so much for your support in all of this. I also have to ask that, for now, you keep the news of the Thirty Years War series and of Poland's postponement under wraps for a bit. I'm not sure how I'm going to present all of this in a State of the Podcast Address, but I felt it was only right to let you all know how I am and what's going on with WDF first.
So to summarise, in case you have forgotten after that essay:
- Poland Is Not Yet Lost will be delayed until 18th May 2019
- But that's ok because the Thirty Years War series will be releasing from 23rd May 2018
- However, that series will be releasing into the WDF feed, and won't be it's own podcast.
- Our Korean War and 1956 Patreon series will remain unchanged, so don't be worried about that!
- I feel much better now, so thanks so much for your support. It honestly means so much to me.
And that's it! Thanks for reading if you made it this far - you are all fantastic, and super appreciated by me even if I don't always tell you enough!
But I should ask you in any case - and no judgement here by the way - were you really looking forward to Poland and are you really disappointed? Will the Thirty Years War fill this gap, or are you kind of stumbling blindly through all of this, 37 episodes behind, and aghast at the idea of me releasing still more content? I want to know, because I value your opinion and you keep this show going, so make sure to vote and comment your thoughts below.
Thanksss again guys, you've been great
Zack
xoxo

Zach, I enjoy all of your series. Publish when you can but take the breaks you need. Best wishes for Cambridge. When covering Versailles, hope you cover TE Lawrence and Seven Pillars. PS. July Crisis was my favorite. I like anniversaries also. I was in the fields outside Balaclava 150 years ago the Light Brigade charge. Cheers.

2018-04-22 21:54:04 +0000 UTCSeriously, I feel you work way too hard on the podcast. It wouldn~t be the worst thing on the world to go slower.

2018-04-22 10:13:15 +0000 UTCZack, Anna is 100% correct. You need to take care of yourself. We are in it for the long-term and I for one have been amazed by your high level of output. One of WDF's defining characreistics is your unmistakeable enthusiasm for history. It is contagious and this quality could be at risk due to the need to maintain an overwhelming schedule plus stress. For me, I am extremely excited about the upcoming 30 Years War series as that period represents a huge gap in my knowledge. This morning I just ordered "Christendom Destroyed: Europe 1517-1648" by Mark Greengrass just to try and get a leg up in preparation for this series. Best, Bill Carpenter

2018-04-22 05:51:01 +0000 UTCEven without an additional podcast, you put out more quality content than anyone else I support on patreon. Its totally understandable if you need to slow down a bit

2018-04-21 06:19:59 +0000 UTCZack, For the 100€/month Patreon’s I think you’re slacking.... Get yer finger out or give the money back! Now for me a 4€/month guy I feel like I owe you money because I can’t keep up! By the way where’s my fridge magnet? Relax Zack, I don’t think anyone need the volume you produce. Unless they are using it to get themselves through collage!

2018-04-20 20:07:12 +0000 UTCI agree with Anna.

2018-04-20 15:54:46 +0000 UTCI am so happy with the output from the podcast, I really don't feel aggrieved in any way if you choose to change your release schedule. Please take the time you need for yourself to stay happy and healthy. You're a very gifted thinker and hard worker and you've run into your limitations by trying to exceed them. There is honour in that and wisdom in taking action to adjust for it. All the best Zach from a massive fan.

2018-04-20 12:45:07 +0000 UTCYou already make lots of good quality content so I can wait for Poland is not yet lost. I find the thirty years war fascinating and will enjoy it! The quantity and quality of content you produce is one of the highest so you can take a break and recover.
Torsten Archer
2018-04-20 12:19:07 +0000 UTCThanks so much for that David. You're dead right, even my default setting is too much content, and it would have got to obnoxious levels had I decided to go through with this plan. Believe it or not, I tried at one point to commit to that schedule idea, but I know myself that it's just impossible to abide by one. I could switch off the clock, but I can never really clock out. That's why I must rely on history friends as well as my family to keep me sane. Thanks for your support buddy.

2018-04-20 09:42:26 +0000 UTCHahaha I love it! I guess Poland Is Not Yet Postponed doesn't have a great ring to it. For the record as well, don't worry about Bismarck, he'll be coming along in spring next year once the 1956 series is finished on Patreon 😊
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:38:16 +0000 UTCHahaha, I completely get this! I think 5 weeks was the beginning of my massive production level, but it was also when I learned a lesson that I have since forgotten - that you guys can only consume so much. Thanks so much for your support and understanding bud.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:36:36 +0000 UTCThanks so much for your support Andrew. It's true, my productivity has been very high since last year, and while that's great, I forget sometimes not to let it get out of hand. Quality is key so I don't want under any circumstances to compromise on that. I also don't want to resent what I do since that'd just be tragic.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:34:39 +0000 UTCThanks for that James. Trust me I was very excited about the PLC too, and I'm quite gutted that I'll have to wait another year before releasing even though I know deep down that it makes the most sense.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:31:52 +0000 UTCThanks for that Kent, and trust me, the Thirty Years War will be everything you loved from Bonneys book and so much more!
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:30:22 +0000 UTCI feel sometimes like I simply MUST do all this or else. But in reality I'm only making more work for myself, and bombarding you guys as well!
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:28:44 +0000 UTCYeah buddy! Thanksssss for that.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:27:18 +0000 UTCThanks Craig I appreciate that. My wife is wise indeed, and she could tell that I was getting burned out. It's a common problem for me because I let my ambition get the better of me. So great that I have your support
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:26:50 +0000 UTCTrust me, I'm gutted that Poland Is being delayed, and it was not at all something I wanted to do. I just had to be real with myself though, and accept that I was only one person, and that, yes, 3 podcasts is simply insane. I have to do the Thirty Years War because of the book coming out, so I had to begrudgingly accept that something had to give. Still I feel quite sad about it, even though I know it's for the best.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:24:34 +0000 UTCIt's only when I really think about it that I realise how crazy it was. Before I was just excited about it all without thinking of the practicality of such a release schedule. Thank you for your comment. I'm really looking forward to Poland still, and now that I have even more time it's gonna be better than ever!
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 09:20:21 +0000 UTCI feel there’s a joke about Poland being lost in there somewhere...
Kyle
2018-04-20 08:45:58 +0000 UTCI will be honest. While I love your huge dump of high quality super interesting content, I am still working through some of the five weeks to run wild content haha. I absolutely love the podcast and your amazin work. Take as long as you need to do the best possible work with the best possible mindset and life (wife/running/self care needs time too!). Ok back to the Wars Against the French Remastered...
Kevin Vega
2018-04-20 06:14:56 +0000 UTCZack, you do a wonderful amount of work already, more than most podcasts with whole staffs behind them. I'm totally fine with waiting a bit longer for Poland and I trust you'll be able to keep your high standard of quality up this way without driving yourself mad.
Heather Turcich
2018-04-20 05:35:10 +0000 UTCI am really excited to learn about the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but you're already incredibly prolific, I can wait.
James Hanks
2018-04-20 05:19:13 +0000 UTCbefore joining wdf and listening to the 30 years war, i was then and just finished richard bonney's guide to this war. so these 30 years war podcast are in my wheelhouse of interest, but i am looking forward to the poland podcast as well. i don't like the top three options, and that is why i selected the forth. i have interest in both podcasts, and i am not behind is listening.
Kent Rupel
2018-04-20 04:12:09 +0000 UTCAs I said before: You are doing too much. Slow down and enjoy life! Have fun Zack
John Harrison
2018-04-20 03:45:35 +0000 UTCIt's all good, man.
JimBob
2018-04-20 02:19:31 +0000 UTCZack, I wanted you to know that I fully support your decision. I think you do great work because you love it. It takes great self awareness for you to see that you are at risk of losing that. So this is the right call in my books. You have to have balance in life, and your wife is a wise woman. I look forward to your shows, and there is a ton in your back catalogue to keep us going.
Craig Boyle
2018-04-20 01:55:33 +0000 UTCI am bummed about Poland but your 30 years war special was one of my favorites. Can't wait to see how you expand on it. I agree with everyone. Zack you are doing a fantastic job! I'll say it again, FANTASTIC. You put out a crazy amount of content at top quality. I know you love history podcasting and I love listening to your stuff. Just don't let it consume you or stress you out so much you can't enjoy life.
Deborah Gospodarek
2018-04-20 01:27:31 +0000 UTCI was totally looking forward to Poland. Having said that, I already think you are crazy insane and do way more than is humanly possible. Releasing 3 at once is just... yeah, I don't even have words. It's all good.
The American History Podcast
2018-04-20 01:15:39 +0000 UTCI definitely agree with Abdi above - balancing work and life is the most important thing. The Korean War & 1956 are already too much content for me to keep up with. Speaking for myself and I'm sure all other WDF Patrons, we are supporting you for your quality content, not to drive you into an early grave. So feel free to take a break and/or ease up on the content release - we still love your work Zack! Some suggestions for balancing work & life: set a schedule or maximum time limit per day for researching/podcasting. Or commit to an hour exercising, family time, etc. for each hour spent researching/podcasting. Or split your monthly income from Patreon across all the hours of work you do for the show, then set a minimum $$/hr (i.e. maybe $20/hr is your 'minimum wage' so $1300/month is worth 65hrs work on the show per month).
Ironic Incongruous Nonce
2018-04-20 01:14:23 +0000 UTCThanksssss for that Abdi. I'm telling you now, maintaining that balance can sometimes feel like the hardest thing in the world!
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 00:58:31 +0000 UTC30 years war is good, it is better this wag since you need to balance life and work
Abdi Farah
2018-04-20 00:57:24 +0000 UTCAh yes, I didn't mean to make it sound like you don't really care for Poland in that option. It'll get plenty of love when it does drop. I promise.
When Diplomacy Fails Podcast
2018-04-20 00:57:18 +0000 UTCI voted 2 but I am looking forward to Poland.
