“The Swelling Season”

PITCH:

When a recently defeated regiment commandeers the village of Gristle in search of refuge, roots and recruits, a young pickpocket named Simon finds himself in deep squelch after accidentally murdering the regiment’s wounded toff. With their enemies bearing down on them, and fearing the regiment’s collapse, the regiment’s toadies force the terrified Simon to take the dead toff’s place – mostly since he’s the only one who can fit into the man’s kit. Clad in the dead man’s rusted helm, reeking hussar’s coat and unsightly britches, Simon finds he must either lead his new regiment to victory against their cannibalistic foes – or figure out how to escape without being turned into mulch by his new subordinates.

NOTES:

This’ll be a relatively simple story with a straightforward plot, but I think it allows for a nice amount of worldbuilding and detail. We’ll see village-life, regiments marching, and even have a bit of a fight to close things out.

Simon is our protagonist and hero – for a given value of the word. He’s fairly normal at the offing, but as the story progresses, he’ll start to get a bit strange as well. There’s some potent imagery there, with him dressed in a dead man’s husk, so to speak. Will the roots find him worthy, or will they devour him from the inside out? Will his own people kill him – or will they leave that to the enemy?

While the toadlike mutant sellsword Tod will be instrumental in convincing the recalcitrant toadies that their best option isn’t to scatter and flee – or to execute Simon – but to try and bluff the regiment and their enemies both, it will really be Simon’s story. It’s through his eyes we’ll be introduced to the ‘Turnip-verse’ and the concept of the regiments."
