A life update (& changing to monthly billing)
Added 2022-06-14 23:35:18 +0000 UTCHi everyone,
I don't write here that much, but I want to start off by letting you all know that I very much appreciate your support throughout the years! I have a few updates about my channel, life, and Patreon to share, but hopefully it shouldn't be too long.
First, I'm going to be changing my Patreon billing from "per video" to monthly, which will go into effect July 1 this year (so the 2 videos I plan to post between now and then will not be charged as "per video," but will just be videos for the month of June). I'm making the change mostly for the predictability of revenue for the business as I've been (and will continue to be for the near-term foreseeable future) working on longer and more time-consuming videos (the research and development behind "A Better Way To Picture Atoms" is a good example), and the "per creation" model just doesn't fit that as well. As an added bonus you get more predictability in your monthly payments, too (is that actually a bonus? maybe...). As a detriment you might end up supporting MinutePhysics in a month that has no videos - hopefully that gets balanced out by the releases of the bigger and more involved projects!
You probably already know this, but monthly payments means you'll be charged just once a month for whatever tier you're on right now. If you'd like to support MinutePhysics further, you can change to a higher tier (but no pressure), and if monthly support is not your jam, that's totally fine, too. You've never been under obligation to support my work, I'm grateful for everything you have contributed in the past and will be happy with whatever you decide going forward.
I've been considering changing to monthly payments for a while but held off because (and this is update #2) I was recently on parental leave(!!), and it didn't make sense to switch to monthly and then immediately stop posting for a while (or to switch to monthly only to immediately "pause" my patreon page). Anyway, parenthood has been a great and largely fun adventure so far, and I'm grateful to have the capacity to have taken quite a long parental leave (relative to most jobs in the US at least). The flexibility offered by the job of "science youtuber" has been very helpful for all of the surprises and lost sleep and doctor visits and other time for stuff needed by a baby (including but not limited to cuddling, changing diapers, and reading books)!
If running monthly payments here works out well, I might be able to stop running sponsorships, too - I must admit I'm a bit jealous of folks like Grant of 3Blue1Brown in this regard!
Anyway. TL;DR: I am now a parent! And I'm switching to monthly payments on Patreon. You won't get charged more per month than whatever tier you're on right now (or whatever you change that to in the future).
Thanks so much as always,
Henry

2022-06-15 05:54:13 +0000 UTCI think this is becoming a trend of YouTube channels, when they hit a level of maturity it makes more sense to switch to monthly. Video duration obviously plays a huge part in that too. Wise move
