The Ozma Problem (draft for patrons only)

This is a draft for a video that's coming out next week or the week after - I need to fix the section from 3:12 to 4:00 because I got the electron & positron numbers reversed :/ Please let me know if you find any other mistakes! (& please don't share with anyone else)

Oh, and of course patrons won't be charged when the final version is uploaded publicly to youtube.

Thanks for your support!

Henry

That might be a good thing to include in the footnote!

Henry Reich

Ah, it is very brief! The only Ozma I could think of was in the land of Oz, which it turns out the SETI project is named for. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Ozma

Hold up, I thought we didn't know why there was more matter than antimatter in the universe. Doesn't this explain that?

Jason Hise

Well it's actually the same problem as handedness - if you can establish the right-hand rule, you can explain clockwise & counterclockwise.

Henry Reich

Named after the Ozma SETI project (I have a footnote in the video, but it's very brief)

Henry Reich

Thanks! Yeah this one got a little bit more into the weeds.

Henry Reich

Now imagine trying to explain "clockwise" to an alien using just words.

Jason Youngberg

Why is it called the "Ozma" problem?

Shad Sterling

I tried to look up the left- vs. right-handed electron/positron decay percentage online to double-check you. It is surprisingly hard to find a source that simply states the percentages. So thank you for doing all the work and checking yourself. If I were left to find this information, it would take me many hours to convince myself which numbers were right. Did you consider mentioning Gell-Mann, Feynman, Sudarshan, and Marshak for the discovering the chirality of the weak force?
