Marxism & Meditation: Responding to a Marxist Critique

In this episode Breht reads, and responds to, the essay by the Indian Maoist intellectual Ajith entitled "To Be in Communion with our Social Selves" from the collection of essays titled "Critiquing Brahmanism".

Breht talks about misunderstandings surrounding meditation, the Marxist analysis of religion, the one-sidedness of critiques from both sides of this particular debate, and much  more.

Congratulations Breht, and also thanks for making meditation accessible to those of us put off by the prevailing supernatural framing. And yet, despite the importance of the introspective to counter the "monkey-mind" inducing world we must navigate, I wonder whether social values are really there to be "found", or whether they are brought in from the outside. I've been put off by most teachers (e.g. the ones Michael Brooks recommended), and wonder if there are any you know of that are also socialists. If not, I wonder how that is possible if the compassionate insight is endemic to a higher practice. Thanks.

I have been wrestling with the *appearance* of the lack of space in the Marxist community for the power of spirituality. Thank you for highlighting that the space exists. Your conversation about this, liberation theology, etc. is so appreciated and feels incredibly inclusive and mind-blowingly spot-on.
