2024-08-22 02:45:59 +0000 UTCI will say that it’s a good thing Biden introduced a policy to withhold tax credits and other subsidies from real estate companies that don’t follow the 5% annual rent increase limit rule. Harris is likely to do that as well, and in addition, she’s not just focused on giving people money for down payments, but also building more starter homes, because the lack of starter homes seems to be one of the main things driving up the rental market when young middle class single people can’t even afford to buy starter homes, so they’re stuck competing with lower income renters and that just keeps driving up prices for people “further down the ladder”. I do agree that we need to do more to make it so renting doesn’t suck, but it used to be pretty easy for young single middle class people to buy a starter home. My mom, on a single teacher’s salary, bought her first 2 bedroom 1 bathroom house when she was like 30. I would be lucky to afford that at 30 with a likely higher salary than her if I go into GIS, which is what I’m in college for right now. So overall, need more on the renter’s side, but also finally getting some good homeownership policies that aren’t just about subsidizing demand but also boosting supply in a way that makes sense.

2024-08-18 23:52:23 +0000 UTCOne thing to keep in mind on the $25k for a down payment, is that it's just towards the down payment, so it probably wouldn't have any affect on cost of a house. If it has a negative affect it would most likely be that banks have more strict, or high down payment requirements.
