Bonus video - Videos that might have been

I thought I'd make another full Patreon-exclusive video to tide you over between Sterek and The Wrong. This one covers some of the ideas I've had for videos that never came to fruition, including topics such as Glee, Riverdale, Degrassi fanfiction, EastEnders... Who could ask for anything more!! Plus a few updates at the end.

ok but another note about the mean girls musical, i was very big into it when i was in middle school (and to answer your question as to why, it's simply because i had no taste), and in the song "world burn" the entire ensemble shouts "Janis is a space dyke" which was actual the first time i'd ever heard that word. a few years later when i realized i was a lesbian i learned it was a slur...in the new movie they changed it to "pyro lez" which still really doesn't solve the issue. but at least they actually made Janis canonically gay? it only took them 20 years but small victories? also i've still to this day never seen the original movie so i'm not sure if they call Janis a dyke in that one, they probably do, but either way just another example of something they REALLY should've gotten rid of.

Haha I guess I respect the attempt to show you something less kiddie? The most mature thing we watched was La Famille Bélier, which is a pretty hokey French comedy from a few years ago (most notable for inspiring the best picture winning remake CODA)

Jane Mulcahy

A belated Mean Girls thought - I'm actually a fan of the musical but with the awareness that they really had to dumb down the wit and actual *meanness* of the original content to sell tickets to old fogeys and tourist families. I saw the Broadway cast like right before the pandemic hit so I clearly feel some type of way about it lol. My last bit of joy before lockdown. I thought it was a cute touch that Cady just found math and numbers to be more comprehensible than romance, but I totally get what you're saying in your criticism. What I thought was more disappointing was that the remake (???) movie had every opportunity to inject the meanness back into the content and it just?? Made it worse????? I know the songs are corny but you had a whole Renee Rapp to work with....

The French language learner soap opera is so funny because it's exactly the sort of thing my high school French teachers would hate. When I was in high school French, our teacher showed us Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources which were very... interesting movies. If you read the Wikipedia summary of the plots, you can get the gist of how bizarre it was to show this to a class of high schoolers.

Omg I feel the exact same way when I get really obsessed with something... it's like I love it TOO much and then revisiting it is like seeing an ex

Yay! I’m super excited on you and your mom’s behalf, and wish you all the best with your EastEnders viewing. I suppose the lack of physical media makes sense considering just how much of it there is. I think a bluray would only hold ~10 hrs of standard definition video, which means you’d need 698 disks minimum. That’s so scary.

Air Stratus

okay would you believe it if I told you this is how I'm learning that BBC iplayer has EE 2008-2012. thank god, that's the exact era me and my mom are watching so this could set us up for a few years potentially! but tbf I'm seeing this apparently only dropped in March?? good timing I guess. RadioTimes article about it says they're planning to add a year's worth of episodes every month 😳 this could be huge. I agree, I don't see why they couldn't just drop a DVD set. there would probably be plenty of nerds like me willing to drop a couple hundred dollars on it. maybe it's not as common to release physical collections with soaps since it's so many episodes + less people interested in doing a full watch through? I will have to at least listen to the music from WATT!

Jane Mulcahy

Glad I could help! I love hunting pod after pod of white whales. This is going to vex me for a while, though, now that it’s on my radar. Why is it so hard to find physical collections of Eastenders? Why do they only release the occasional collection of episodes with Iconic Exits or Entrances or Holidays? Why does the BBC iPlayer have separate listings for EastEnders 2008-2012 and 2022-present? Why is the BBC? At least when it comes to digital access, it seems like online communities are hopeful that the iPlayer library will grow over time, as they report that only 2008 was initially announced. It’s apparently grown quietly as time passes The apparent lack of physical media is what’s really perplexing me. The few entries popping up on WorldCat are singular episodes, interviews, and documentaries on DVD/VHS I’m also haunted by the discovery (and inaccessibility) of DVD recordings of academic discussion panels re: the development, production, reaction, and public discourse surrounding EastEnders at the University of Westminster; the university hasn’t digitized them, and they appear to exclusively be accessible on-site 😔 As for We Are The Tigers: It’s an easy one to miss! Smaller productions don’t often get much press, and footage tends to be harder to track down. I’ve only been able to find one bootleg of WATT and it was shot by someone with apparent directorial aspirations because they make Some Decisions. That said, I think WATT is much more successful in its exploration of the heightened emotions, issues with self-image, toxic friendships, and complicated relationships with gender than Mean Girls could dream. That could partially be credited to its writer and composer being a trans man who realized he was trans over the course of writing it. Self-reflection and earnestness can go a long way in elevating art, and I think that goes double for musicals. Also the production has that essential campy lifetime flavor of serial killer cheerleader plots to tie it up in a bow I somehow have not seen the Bring It On musical, but I’ll add it to my own list, as I’m an enthusiast for things that are not very good

Air Stratus

i can imagine! everyone in my life keeps telling me that I need to be the change i want to see in the world and make my own damn riverdale video, but it seems so daunting! the work itself along with the prospect about making something for public consumption about my stupid interest. you're very brave

raychle

omg thank you for your service, I will be investigating these resources... I've checked the EE subreddit superficially before but only found people talking about the aforementioned fan made website that was taken down. I have not watched Serial Mom but it's been on my list for years so I was very excited to see that it's on Tubi! and I haven't heard of We Are the Tigers. but I have seen Bring It On: the musical more than once for some reason (it isn't very good)

Jane Mulcahy

I'd definitely like to finish the show some time, like I said I really enjoyed watching it! and yeah I've heard it gets even crazier post-s5. but I doubt I'll ever make a major video about it. as much as I've made some huge tv deep dives and plan to make at least one more soon, it's one of the most exhausting types of video to make 😭

Jane Mulcahy

The fact that I've watched all those Lifetime gay movies has me reevaluating some things, lol. Oh, to be a closeted tween/teen in the late 90s early 00s

Jermain Scott

just got to the part about the french soap opera--completely forgot about this, but we watched a spanish version of that when i was in high school. i loved that shit. also loved the google+ shoutout at the beginning. we were truly the lost social media generation

raychle

god please please i would do anything for a jane mulcahy video on riverdale. i agree with several of the opinions you presented in this video. you're correct about kevin, and it doesn't get better until season seven. but liike. it would be so wonderful for me and so many little freaks like me if you made a riverdale video. even if you *don't* make a video on it (you don't have to make a video on everything you consume) you've gotta watch season six. seven too, if you want, but season six of that show is just... unbelievable. unprecedented. dare i say unhinged? anyway that's my soapbox everyone should watch riverdale, the best/worst show ever made.

raychle

Think I found the new year’s wedding episodes you couldn’t find footage for— https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5s0x47 and https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6jtqgy?playlist=x6g6ch

Apologies in advance for the unwieldy comment— I have incurable librarian brain and a longstanding tradition of watching every eastenders christmas special with my college roommate’s mum, so I immediately ran to scavenge for resources. I found a bunch of eastenders episodes hidden around various corners of internetarchive, including 70 or so here: https://archive.org/details/EE2001 While poking around, I also found this book https://archive.org/details/isbn_9780745605685/page/n9/mode/1up that seems like it would be relevant to your interest in eastenders + media that’s often viewed as ‘trashier’ in a very gendered way There also seems to be an effort to archive/ disseminate methods of preserving and watching episodes through temporary google drive drops. The apparent leader of this effort makes regular updates via reddit, with the latest here: https://www.reddit.com/r/eastenders/comments/1djhs0r/eastenders_archive_update_for_1986_190624/ I also found this blog mentioned( https://walfordweb.com/eastenders-big-bang-friday-18-january-1985-ep-1-sc-t355394.html?sid=213e3977fa44e3713918a9b7bd3eb2e0 ) which appears to include production materials in addition to fan discussions With at least some of my terrier-like instincts to hunt resources sated, I can now comment on the actual video. I cannot promise I won’t return with more links later, though. Forgive me. - The note about Tubi reminded me that John Waters’ Serial Mom is on Tubi now. Upon seeing it in the Recently Added, I thought of Menu for Murder and your Lifetime Mommy Movies and thought: I wonder if Jane Mulcahy has seen the john waters serial murderer mom movie that roger ebert proclaimed ‘too sympathetic to the serial murderer mommy to be funny’ - On a similar note of “this seems similar to things you’ve enjoyed or might enjoy,” have you heard of the serial killer cheerleader off-broadway musical We Are The Tigers? - Weirdly enough, one of my first fandom experiences was also Google+ based - My high school german course also had those language learning soap operas; however, my teacher immediately grew bored with them, and he showed us Lola Rennt and Metropolis instead - Congrats on the sterek video success! I keep remembering the ‘lost boyfriend with no one to love’ bit at inopportune times and releasing one loud, explosive bark of laughter to no apparent end. Thank you for cursing me in this fashion Sorry again for this monster comment. A shark’s gotta swim, a girl’s gotta eat, a librarian’s gotta pile reference material on desks. Or something.

I have a feeling I know what property you might be covering in your super secret video, because I partially succumbed to that pipeline, but I'll bite my tongue. Can't wait for the Wrong video!

Finn

The first thing my first UK friends showed me was The Mighty Boosh which I got really into (and also Limmy's Show but he's Scottish obviously.) Me and my roommates watched a lot of Come Dine With Me, and they tried to get me into Skins but I only made it like 1.5 seasons in. And as a fandom tumblr teen ofc there was a time I was really into Doctor Who, but I haven't watched in a long time

Jane Mulcahy

I've enjoyed all your patreon vids so far but this one was especially interesting in peering behind the curtain in how you decide what to talk about. Thanks for a great solo podcast with visuals!! Have you watched much other British media? (I know that's broad)

James Hixton

people can say what they want about Glee and Klaine, but season 2 was peak television and Blaine's Teenage Dream introduction was a cultural reset and I will die on this hill forever.

Jane Mulcahy

I haven't interacted with much online fan content so I don't know what the majority opinion is, but my friends and I were very into them as a couple.

Beth

lol I feel like now people think it's lame or cringe or something? from the very occasional glee post I'll see cross my feeds? but Klaine was very popular so maybe that's still the minority opinion

Jane Mulcahy

Who wasn't a Klaine shipper?

Beth

haha unfortunately for you I have never heard of either of those!

Jane Mulcahy

Saw gay lifetime movies and immediately went 👀

Because I like to throw out wild guesses, just in general, I'm going to say that the mystery TV show is either From (because several recent videos have included the word "from") or the Vanderpump Rules spin-off Summer House (because this video ended with a weighty mention of a "fun summer," right after a reference to the Wrong movies, many of which were shot in David DeCoteau's "house").
