Beautifully Weird Photo

Researching a video about "how TV went from dumb to good." Through my lens, I think it'll be a rambling story about how changes in business and technology, not culture, changed the medium. So I ran into this.

I am one of those people who is very hesitant to slap the label "Lynchian" on things (since I basically parrot what I read David Foster Wallace say about it). But I think this pic clears the bar.

"The Wonderful World of Color" in black and white, the weird posture, and small terrible TV, the confusing framed instruments. The bow tie. Of course the bow tie. The expression. I'm in love.

hahaha didn't even notice the wall. what riches it contains!

The rattan wall covering part of the wallpaper just screams "Smith's Discount Furniture and Appliances". The framed ukelele and tiny banjo just add to the ambiance.

"selling Color TVs in black and white" feels like an 80s son lyric.

There's some sort of joke to be had about "selling color TV's in a black and white photo" akin to "selling refrigerators to the Inuits" to be had here, I'm sure... They guy must've been a hell of a salesman.

lol it's part of a collection so it's just an la 50s dude

Phil Edwards

Is that Philo Farnsworth? Or just some 50's dude trying to sell color TV'S in a black and white photo?

Jay Hash

He looks like Uncle Fester trying to sell TVs.
