Hi Patrons! Becky here. If you're reading this, it means that DiNK has just ended, and I'm about to have 2 free days in Colorado with Naomi! After the rush to finish drawing Issue 4, figure out my taxes, and pack for the convention, I'm excited to have some breathing room. We're planning to spend a lot of time eating and drinking, but I'll let you know if we draw buildings or something!
In order to finish Issue 4 in time for DiNK, I drew pages 101-107 and the cover in about 3 weeks. I usually create one complete page per week, from digital layout to finished ink wash. (Barry does the digital lettering, word balloons, and sound effects. Please take a moment to appreciate that sweet bone-crunching KRRACK above!) There were a lot of long days and some late-night tired-crying involved in this schedule, but it was interesting to work on several pages at once. I liked skipping from one page to another when I got stuck on something. It was also more efficient to set up the light box and ink wash to tone three pages in a full work day, instead of one page in a couple hours. I told Barry not to get used to it, though. :)
Funny story: I was giving these pages a final read-through at my day job, before Barry made a PDF for printing. At that point, I realized that I'd forgotten about Lillian's black eye on pages 102-103! I was impatient for Barry to make the PDF so I could print Issue 4 that day, so I used a marketing computer to fix it. I told my coworkers that I needed to Photoshop several black eyes into the scene because I'd forgotten to include them, and at the end of the day I found out that they'd mistakenly heard "black guys" and just didn't say anything!
I hope you enjoy these peeks into the process.
Postscript from Barry: Becky gives me too much credit - I don't do all the sound effects. Becky did the "KRRACK" on this page, not me!
Postscript from Becky: I inked the "KRRACK," but the broken-up letters were totally Barry's idea, and he can check the "barry suggestion" layer in the Photoshop file if he's curious! (I'm not petty, just...thorough.) :D
