Moby Dick by Herman Melville: Chapters 1 and 2
Added 2021-10-30 03:39:54 +0000 UTCUpon revisiting Moby Dick, Ishmael is a rather insufferable character, and I can't tell how much of it is the character and how much is Melville; maybe some of you can help me decide.

Ishmael does like to hear himself talk (or think, or monologue or whatever.) A lot of that does seem to just be Melville though, since he goes and on and jams all those Biblical and classic references into his other prose as well, what I've read of it. But I still like his style for the most part. If you haven't read it, I'd recommend the book he published before Moby Dick, called White Jacket, a recounting of life on board a US warship also taken from Melville's own service. It was a way bigger commercial success at the time apparently, though people don't talk about it much anymore. Still worth checking out, especially if you have an interest in the time and place. Great reading, thanks!
