How do you usually learn a story from a game? Yes, I did it before in myprojects. And I always do it with cutscenes. This is the easiest way to inform a player about the worldbuilding inside of the game, it’s background story and further plot development and so on. There’s nothing bad about, but while working with “Hazard: Magical Girdle” I tried to avoid using cutscenes.
This time you’ll get absolutely all of the information from the gameplay. For example, you find there a document which you can read, or you can speak to some character that can mention an important detail from past events or even answer your question.
Is it more difficult than using a cutscene? It is. The developers of the game work a lot with the storyline, creating the situations for a player where he needs to get information himself. Is it more difficult than using a cutscene? It's not. When you limit yourself with these conditions you just start thinking this way and everything goes smooth.
How do you like cutscenes or absence of them? What do you enjoy more? I’m looking forward to seeing your comments!
