patreon sales tax
Added 2020-05-29 18:23:45 +0000 UTCso, an annoying thing is being included on patreon starting july 1 and that is that certain people depending on their state laws will have a sales tax added to their pledges. this will on average affect about 30% of patron as a lot of states don't tax purely digital content. the taxed amount will range from i'm guessing 20 cents on one dollar pledges to 1 dollar on 6 dollar pledges
i don't want this to catch anyone off guard.
now, they are adding some tools for us creators that will help reduce this depending on the type of content we provide, and one of those tools is determining how much of the pledges can be considered as a charitable donation from patrons to simply support a creator. given the fact that a lot of my content is available on sites like deviantart i think i have a strong case to relieve a lot of that tax . i know that at the worst case scenario it would be an added dollar, but i'd rather reduce that dollar to something like 30 cents.
so i'll definitely work on doing that because all of you have enabled me to be creatively free in a way i've never had the option and for that you have my sincere gratitude.

2020-07-30 07:57:12 +0000 UTCAs a European, Patreon has always been charging me tax on top of any Patreon sub I have. I'm paying 15,73 USD for 13 USD worth of content.

2020-05-31 03:09:58 +0000 UTCRight, I just got told about this from a different patreon too. What is happening is that in the EU, Patreon has already charged taxes on top of the pledge (so a $5 tier costs $5+tax for us), but now they have to expand that to several other countries too. Which means people in the EU should not see a change. Also the creators do not get the tax part, that is going to the tax offices of the patron's country. In my experience, the tax is less prominent the more you pay, so the $5 tiers pay less tax than just five times of the tax on the $1 tiers. (The $1 tiers get the worst end of the stick tbh...)

2020-05-30 22:02:09 +0000 UTCnonon i get the full thing then later i pay my taxes on it, this is a tax added to the payments of patrons but it seems i have overestimated it because i thought the sales tax is like european vat. we already pay that one but the actual sales tax that patreon is talking about it something like 13% so it's even less than i initially calculated. i'll still look into the upcoming tools and maybe i can reduce those taxes overall. fingers crossed

2020-05-30 17:06:59 +0000 UTCDid i understand that correct, that you do not recieve, the full 6 $ but less due to tax decreases this? Or is our 6$ then 7$ for example after the change...? Some of us came from defiantart.... for me I can say i joined patreon only because of you. And if you create a pay model with 7$ a the same content including the tax added i would join the 7$ if you then get the full 6$. If you dont want your followers be charged more (in case its added to the followers purse)you still can create an extra 0,30$ pay model in parallel to the 1$ with the same content than the 1$, than every follower can decide by them self. Of course your decision....

2020-05-30 10:53:56 +0000 UTCPoland here, they already charge me extra 23 cents for every dollar so 🤷♀️ It's nice that you care, but for some of us it won't change anything

2020-05-30 07:05:03 +0000 UTCI already get 20 cents added to each dollar via paypal.... we'll see if they add more or not. either way since I'm new to this patreon thing I'm currently feeling out my budget for the next few months to see if I can afford this.^^

2020-05-29 23:42:00 +0000 UTCGermany here, for my $27 worth of total pledges per month I pay $28.56 total, so that's $1.56 taxes... So there was always some tax, but what you say sounds an increased amount to that. I really appreciate your warning and you looking into decreasing that!
