Added 2023-11-15 11:42:09 +0000 UTCAs many of you have said and added to my points, Wendy is no doubt a very skilled vocalist but she's also very clean and technical that at times it feels too safe and lacking individual interpretation.
Her doing musicals definitely makes sense because of the dramatics she can deliver when it's called for.
Still enjoyed it a lot though!

She's actually one of the most versatile singers in kpop imo and suits R&B alot, but I believe here in this video that focuses on singing, she was too focused on perfectly capturing all the technical aspects of the songs to showcase her pre-musical vocals since she filmed this just a few days after wrapping up the musical and still somewhat caught up in that style of singing (?) which is a good thing, the musical training will do wonders for her after it marinates a bit and she starts incorporating more artistic choices. Right now, she's leaning more into playing it safe but no doubt, always improves and surprises me. But looking at red velvet's discography and all the songs covers she does on ig live or music shows, she's a vocal chameleon and often molds her voice to match the atmosphere of the songs (e.g. GOT the beat, one of my fav vocals from her) and adds quite alot of her own artistic touches while not neglecting the techniquilty of it, whilst others are kind of forced to get creative when covering some songs because the original can be a bit out of their comfort range unlike Wendy here with "I have nothing". And honestly, kpop suffers alot of nasaly or congested singers especially when live singing, so Wendy's voice will always be a treat to listen to wether live or recorded. Diving into some of her osts, show guesting, ig lives, etc will help elaborate on what i'm trying to say and hopefully, in the upcoming months she'll release her 2nd album and she's been pushing for pop/r&b so fingers crossed we get to hear more of her great voice!

2023-12-23 12:55:39 +0000 UTCI loved this ep along with D.O. and Doyoungs! also this is completely unrelated but during the duet portion I suddenly thought of this show called Sea Of Hope! it had singers like Onew, AKMU Suhyun, Yoon Jong Shin (CEO of Mystic; billlies company & popular singer in Korea) + some other singers. They had performances like these where they sing in this area on the beach, usually to an audience or by themselves.

But, its a top-of-the-line, world-class version of that and she just needs producers who can put it to good use.

If you want to show kids how to write the alphabet, you'll show Wendy's notebook. However, sometimes you want her to try cursive writing. I hope that makes sense If you listen to her interviews throughout the years or what her members say about her...she is a very carefully planned and safe person. She plans her day, week, month and year out. So for her, she probably worked on her foundation of singing more than the expressive and freeflowing side. In her mind, she probably sees a song and feels if she sings it technically well, she'll hit it 90% of the time but if she tries something different, she'll hit it 60% of the time (in her head) and that scares her. Just my opinion. Hopefully what i said made sense

For the songs she chose for example, I much prefer Joy's version of Love on Top and have you seen Seulgi singing I Have Nothing?? Her tone is everythinggggg!!! I appreciate Wendy's mastery though, especially in RV. Seulgi and Joy have my heart though. Surprisingly her predebut covers (like her Halo cover) probably have more of what you're looking for (as well as their earlier albums). I loved how she mentioned in this episode how her voice back in the day was a lot thicker compared to now. My theory is, its a by-product of Wendy being an incredibly hardworking and honestly obsessive technical singer that sometimes its meant she's sacrificed a bit of the character in her singing, whereas now she sings more in straight lines. Its why when they sing the same line in a song, I usually prefer Seulgi (and sometimes even Joy). But she's seriously always evolving as a singer so I look forward to if this is something she addresses in the future. Even so, bloody hell what a voice. We and Kpop are lucky to have her. edit: btw she just finished her first musical! she's been doing shows the last few months and wrapped up just before Chill Kill promos

I can tell that itβs helped with conveying the emotions with her voice / facial expressions when singing especially in βillusionβ. Sheβs constantly improving which makes me so excited to see her progress even more π₯Ή

While she is an incredible singer and her rendition of I Have Nothing was a joy to listen to, the small things that she misses to connect the dots may prevent her from being at the pinnacle of other current Kpop singers. I agree with your thought that it may be due to the training system from within the industry. I think something interesting to think more about would be a comparison of singers who were trained within the big companies and those who weren't (i.e. indie artists and artists from smaller companies like Antenna and Mystic - but their solo artists specifically). Anyways, thanks for the content as always.
