Red Velvet Chill Kill Album Review

Oh brother.

WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU! WE ARE ROOTING FOR YOU HOW DARE YOU?!!?!?

I am soo glad I have 3 other EP's to listen to/revisit after this because if this was the most update RV album I would've listened to I would've been sorely disappointed.

Easily my least favourite RV Album sonically, nothing grabbed me or excited. It's verrry melancholic which others have pointed out and lacks the exciting musicality and vocal presence I usually love from them.

After such a long wait I would've wanted a bit more HOWEVER I do think it does sound like them also so at least to their credit they haven't abandoned their identity, I would just love more of the velvet side explored and for them to mature to suit their experience.

I'M GOING to revisit this album 6 months and see if my mind changes because I have a feeling this album may need me in a specific mood to appreciate it.

SO you think being rude to me is going to do what exactly? Make me change thoughts on music I simply didn't connect with? I can sit and act however I want to. That same "teenager energy" is also what makes me squeel and get hyper when I enjoy something. Also your opening line is completely bullshit LOOOOOL. I hate fake people like you cos if I was 'allowed" ,mind you no one needs to gives me permission to like or dislike anything, then you wouldn't written this passive aggressive drive. I said what I said, the album is still mid.

Koko3op

Everyone is of course allowed to dislike whatever they dislike, but if you listen to this album and find it monotonous or samey, you're browsing restaurants with your ears as well as your eyes. The title track is divisive but no one can honestly call it boring. Knock knock explores the same creepy carnival sound like Marionette. Underwater is pure sexy and sultry and judging by your sad sack posture, someone seems to have left you recently. This brightens massively with Will EverI, and I'm considering the video froze, bc not a single muscle seem to have moved in the last two minutes. Nightmare sounds a bit similar to Knock Knock, but flips moods in the chorus. Iced coffee is the same smooth and sultry vocals and mood as Underwater. One Kiss mixes the tempo and flow from all prior tracks and Bulldozer seems like a lighter version of it. Wings goes straight up gospel and Scenery is the obligatory ending ballad. All throughout the production and vocals have been top tier. Not anything extremely groundbreaking but effortlessly top tier quality, and no sub 2 min songs to be found. I think it's the most cohesive album, and as much as I love Perfect Velvet along with everyone else, there are still Attaboy and experimental songs like that, alot of people feel is too weird. Again, tastes differ, but this "reaction" is lacking more than the album ever could. At least sit up straight like a griwn ass man who's getting paid good money to listen and not teenager having an internal hissyfit during class. One thing is for sure: they can never appease everyone. Make an album with less than one r&b song and people demand a full velvet album. Make a more r&b album and people whine about it being boring. Oh well, I am happy you seemed to like some small parts. Hope the next album suits you better, but I know it doesn't.. Kudos for recognizing Irene's solo's brilliance

Ohh I definitely will revisit it one day for sure

Koko3op

would love for you to revisit this album someday!! it was my least fave album of theirs as well, but i suddenly had the urge to play the album during a long drive. enjoyed it. i think it's one of those albums where you have to listen from top to bottom to enjoy the experience (like i had with be the sun/sector17, forever1 and exist --- all of which are played heavily during long drives lol)

Louise

thats too bad, this is actually one of my fave albums, i LOVE chill kill. it was interesting to hear ur opinions tho.

jasspberry

I'm not a big Reveluv but I still have this album on constant rotation since release, so I guess I'm liking it so far. I do like melancholic music though, so it tracks. Haven't examined each song on the album critically yet, but I do love "Chill Kill" the more I listen

Mint

I’d say this is a very muted red velvet it’s missing the sparkle in a sense, while I still personally enjoy a lot of this album it feels like the vocals are muted missing the quirks and flares to me

Liz

Yess exactly

Koko3op

The thing is I like most of the songs on this tracklist and there were pretty moments but I was kinda frustrated because I felt like there was potential for me to love the songs with some tweeks. This album isn’t good to listen in all one sitting. The songs weren’t able shine properly cuz the vibe of every song was too similar. I love a melancholy song just not for every track. This could have been a good album if they had at least swapped out 2 or 3 songs and add diverse sound by replacing them with tracks with (to quote you) more exciting musicality and vocal presence.

I didnt go into this album with any expectation on purpose just in case, i just wanted some new rv and best idea i could have had like this is not my k-aoty but underwater, nightmare, iced coffe and wings are going in my playlist. For the rest i dont care and i am content with that. ( the outback steakhouse moment ahahaha you gave up fr) i like the lack of rap in this album, and funny thing i think quite opposite of you: in this album i generally like the choruses but they lack the punch in the bridge, whan im expecting some crazy stuff happening. Also dont have to hide wendy to be able to show more of irene and yeri The thing that dissapointed me the most was the lack of a traditional korean touch, the visual concept ate and all thay had to do is include some instrumental moment or some vocal lines in that style. This was your chanceeeee comeon Anyway with crush new album and dean being back im like ok cute enough, now next

inconsistent enjoyer

I don’t like Chill Kill(song) but i think thats what makes it a good pick for a title track. It’s a joke in our fandom that every title gets the zimzalabim treatment, AKA a few years later everybody says they always loved the song LOL. Personally I really love a lot of songs on this album and i especially like the layering in the adlibs? Its crazy. Especially in bulldozer, Wendy was talking about how detailed the adlibs are in that song(in the countdown live). We have very different taste but i still enjoyed watching your reaction as always 🥰

lilyfuturetone

Unfortunately this is sort of OP for companies with multiple groups for older groups (different for companies with 1 group like dreaamcatcher or oh my girl). All efforts go into the newer, younger groups. A more positive way of thinking about it is older groups def are given more freedom to do what they prefer....unfortunately that prob divides up reactions more so vs a new group who's songs are written to appeal to the most. But, its not a bad thing necessarily

Edward Lee

Oooooo nice!!

Koko3op

CHRISTMAS ALBUM makes perfect sense!! I soo agree and i'm glad they got to pick it too!

Koko3op

ahhh I also liked that in this album it seems Irene and Yeri got more lines and got to sing actual melodies instead of what they usually get to do in most RV songs. I read it was one of the main focus in their A&R team with this album to try new line distribution. You can notice in Chill Kill how Wendy gets to rap, Joy got the big high note, Yeri and Irene were actually singing lol It was very nice!

velvetfirefly

oh wow you really hated that LOL I'm loving this album so much! It's funny because I feel like it's a Christmas album of sorts: it takes one theme(winter/chill) and runs with it. It is definitely the least diverse RV album and the least "red" so it might be hard to swallow for some fans. It doesn't top Perfect Velvet but it's a good album that it's doing its job. I loved the title track and I'm happy that they chose it themselves(they were actually gonna come back with another track, probably Knock Knock? Can you imagine??? lol). It's nice knowing they have some control over their body of work. 9 years in, they definitely know one thing or two about their music and about what their fans want. Too bad this was a no for ya dog! <3 Better luck next time! And I hope you got to eat some delicious food! LOL

velvetfirefly

HAHAHA i'm okay with being on the wrong side!! Omg no way, well tbh it does have a particular red velvet sound for sure. I'll be looking forward to revisiting it

Koko3op

Noo you're on the wrong side of history on this one I'm sorry 😭 I didn't expect you to like Chill Kill or some of the songs on this album, but I did think you'd appreciate the production and vocals more. Their head of A&R posted on instagram with a love letter to this album saying “it's been a while since i felt that this is what i live for” - and this is the person who's been in charge of their sound since before debut. Also the producers on this album are all proven hit makers for RV including Kenzie, Cazzie, monotree, LDN noise etc -- i'm not gonna dismiss you're opinion ofc lol and I've rly enjoyed your journey with RV, but I agree I think being in a certain mood helps this album and you should maybe return to it at a later date.

dyacc

You hit EVERY NAIL with this comment omfg. Like literally everything! I love this so much, I feel seen. But yeah this would've worked more sonically as a mini maybe so it wouldn't feel like such a drag.

Koko3op

LOOOOOOOOL I was going through so much. Someone mentioned Sweet juice and i totally would've loved something like that.

Koko3op

This question would make more sense if I hadn't just visited their entire discography lol. ALSO I say in the video and description that this is very much Red Velvet which isn't the issue but it doesn't explore the parts of their sounds I enjoy.

Koko3op

Yeah I'm quite disappointed as well. I like it better than their last couple of releases, but as someone who really LOVES RV's full albums, this is their weakest one for me yet. The Perfect Red Velvet was already going to be tough to top for me, but I was at least hoping Chill Kill would give the same interesting vibes, but it just feels so samey throughout. They got the concept down, but the music? TPRV had so many different genres going on that even though it messed with the album's overall cohesion to a degree, the songs had so many interesting elements to them while retaining the RV vibes. There's nothing that really stands out on Chill Kill. Like it feels like RV, but it's also kind of boring? I'm going to listen to the album a couple more times to get a feel. I think my fav songs right now are One Kiss, Bulldozer, and Will I Ever See You Again? The album gets better in the later half. for me I was hoping for some more variety other than "oooh kinda spooky and melancholy" lol. Some of the songs felt like they tried to have some sass but didn't really get there. As for Chill Kill the song, it's okay I guess. The chorus is quite weak and I think it weakens the song. I wished they had leaned a bit more into the slight like... hip-hop feel it was giving at the beginning. I do like the 80s feel of the bridge tho and the song still gives RV feels. The choreo is quintessential RV as well. But it's meh. I don't know if SM is getting lazy with RV or what, but it's so disappointing. I was hoping this album would be a return to form for them and it just really wasn't giving what I wanted, which sucks because I really liked the teasers. But where are the vocals? I was falling asleep and I didn't have Wendy belting in my ear to wake me up lol. It feels like nowadays with so many groups, the albums have such strong interesting concepts, but fail to deliver musically. Like the Chill Kill MV was great, I would watch that movie, but the soundtrack was not delivering lol. Maybe it'll be a grower.

Mica Ferguson

the grimace on your face from hearing chill kill chorus to browsing restaurants midway a song is sending me lmaoooooo your energy dropped so quick hahaha I like the album but it's definitely not top tier. When we say we want velvet, we either get ballads or a dark pop song. SM need to get it together!

Hibz

Maybe you over estimated their sound? Because this album is so red velvet
