Small Arms of WWI Primer 080: German MG08

FINALLY got this cleared.  Now I need a nap.

Or I'll just hang out on Discord and play video games before getting back to it.

Great episode!!! You guys do such awesome work!

All we need is the gun..

C&Rsenal

The support is essential, we appreciate it!

C&Rsenal

But was it fun?

C&Rsenal

That was a great episode. Probably one of the best you have produced so far. This was fascinating since I just read "A Rifleman Went to War" by Herbert W. McBride. It is amazing that you can use this for indirect fire. I assume you can use his work for when you get to the potato digger as research.

Othias and crew, this is one hell of an opus. Congratulations on being able to present such a fine product (your videos specifically, though the Maxim is mighty nice too...), and thank you very much for all of your hard work and the sacrifices you make in your personal life to make the videos happen. Makes me proud to be a (very pitifully small) financial backer.

Great episode, just finished watching it for the second time (catch more details that way!). As an aside, I recently had the opportunity to shoot some guns in real life for the first time, including an SMLE no. 1 mk. 3. Having had practical experience, I now have even more respect for what y’all do, especially when you mention having range days of multiple takes. Keep up the great work!

So, funny thing about the Dragon... I spent high school in Greenville SC and would day trip up to Asheville and over towards TN. That route and a few choice others I know of, pre-good-internet were just unnamed fun roads that I happened to find on the map. Years later it's become this big thing and when I looked it up I was surprised to realize it was the old "fun road."

C&Rsenal

Also the hydraulic delay...

C&Rsenal

It was one of the previous updates on here. They will be called "Squib"

The Grom cracks me up. I drove one around the parking lot but couldn't quite fit well enough for much else! I actually walked out of the 80's for this one. I'm prepping a 98 Ace Tourer. Probably going to fit an aux tank.

Headed to Denver by bike? Don't know exactly where it is in relation to you, but: Tail of the Dragon? I believe the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is west of Denver, so that's probably out, altho' it's supposed to be another one of those bucket list rides. Good luck crossing Kansas, I understand that's one of those "Kill me now, I'm so BORED" stints, much like West TX w/o the desolation... As far as "gun relevant" stops, I dunno, maybe stop by CMP South in Anniston & see if they've got any more modern toys you might want? Best o' luck w/ the ride: call out the dates & some gas stops & I"m sure you'll get some other riders who'll keep you company & provide some logistical support in case of breakdown...

I can't help but notice the similarity between the rotating crank/slot locking action in the Transitional Model Maxim and the later Petreaux and St. Etienne MG's put together in France...

Edward Brush

could've had the gun on a tripod or stand of some kind, seeing that you don't seem to need to flip it that much?

Samson

Great episode! If you want to head a bit further North, Simpson’s Ltd and Rock Island Auction are in Illinois. The Rock Island Museum itself is worth visiting. If you get that far North and head West on I80, stop in at Brownells.

Paul Levy

also if I could recommend one gun it'd REALLY like to see, it'd be the Martini. I think they were used in anti-ballon work or something for WWI, so that's my nomination.

Andrew MacDougall

you mentioned something at the end about doing episodes for guns you don't have access to. whatever happened to this? FWIW I give my personal approval to doing such episodes. better something be covered than hold it back for one small thing. I would be OK with using shooting footage for a similar gun you have already shot with disclaimers about it only being similar and not the same gun.

Andrew MacDougall

Hey glad to see the Maxim on here! Super excited about T-shirts too! If you're headed West, try and hit up the Memphis Zoo. My family and I had a great time seeing that when we headed South from Ohio to Texas. The Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas is also great but that might be a bit farther South than you want to go. Glad you get to take a break. You've earned it!

One of the conversations I used to have with new shooters when I was n RSO had to do with the willingness of the shooting community to share. Many of the shooters I knew were more than willing to let someone else shoot and enjoy their guns. This is behavior you see in very few communities. When was the last time you were at a car show and the owner of some 1960's muscle car handed you his keys and said,"take her out for a spin". The new shooters were always welcome to try their hand at some firearm they had never heard of. That being said, as one firearm enthusiast to another, thanks all of those who loaned their property to Othias and the troops at C&Rsenal.

Bravo Othais, full marks! I remain gobsmacked at the volume of information you unearth and pack into an episode, and this one is an outstanding example. You have my respect, Sir.

Red Marley

Wow. That's a lot of Maxim. If people are interested the Royal Armouries in Leeds has his amazing miniature demonstration gun from about 1890. It's small enough to fit into a suitcase and fires the 7.63 Mauser cartridge. The perfect tool for the consummate salesman to prove the brilliance and reliability of his system. It's incredibly cool as well! Object number is PR.7163

Amazing episode great work

I hope you all manage to enjoy a well earned break. By the way, what classic sportsbike project was it you picked up a while back? I seem to recall seeing it in the updates at some point, but lord only knows which one. I love my bikes too, just impulse bought another Grom (off an old friend at a good price, seemed meant to be), and am loving honing about on the little beast again. All those tiny twist country single-track lanes that we too small for 'proper' bikes suddenly become the most amazing places :)

Gavin Rea-Davies

as much as I love Mae its hard for her to say anything other than... "cool I shot a machine gun" when there are more guns to compare them to that will give her lots to say

Christopher Pettirsch

No Maeversation! I feel cheated! <<sigh>>. Enjoy the road trip to Denver, you deserve a couple of weeks off for generating such high quality content that holds the interest of someone who focuses on Cold War firearms. C&Rsenal does a great job of covering the 'deep history'. (PS -Psst! Mae! What's the status of DinoTails?)</sigh>

Jason

I'll be in my bunk.

Dang it, I was just about to get up to go to bed, haha. Thank you Othais!
