It might have been a Forgotten Weapons episode, but I remember watching a video that mentioned cock-on-close had a slight advantage for a higher firing rate as you could gain momentum when closing the bolt to reset the striker. Rather than having to fight the force of the spring while unlocking the bolt and cycling the action. If I've got my facts right, it's also the basis of the Brit's "Mad Minute" with the SMLE and how they trained pre-WWI for fast and accurate shooting with it.

I keep meaning to ask this on the rifle segments: Which is "better": a cock-on-open bolt action or a cock-on-close? Does either system present a clear advantage for either the shooter (ease of manipulation, better/easier extraction or feed, safer, more reliable, easier to clean/clear of mud, etc.) or the army as a whole (is one easier/cheaper to buy, fewer parts, easier to maintain, etc.)? I would THINK that a cock on close system would make more sense due to the fact that you're spreading out the functions of primary extraction and cocking the action over two muscle movements, rather than trying to do both with a single 90-degree rotation of the bolt, but I have nothing to back that opinion with. Both systems are pretty well represented in the military rifles of the early 20th century, so I'm wondering what Othais and Mae's opinions are from a technical as well as a shooter perspective.

Being a New England native, your pronunciation of Worcester and Connecticut had me cracking up.
