As for the infamous safety play: The play concept seems to be a PA Drag Wheel route combination out of heavy package. Thus, the wheel route of Kittle is coupled with a drag route by Ayuk, which is faster developing than the wheel route and also seems to be the first read. However, for the given situation Ayuk has to gain more depth or slow down his route (or ideally both) to find a better spot, where he clears the llnebacker without running into the lane of the safety. The specific route Ayuk ran (especially with his speed), would require Garappolo to throw around the numbers, where the SS presumably beheads him at completion. But I find the blocking scheme for this play call against the given defensive front even more frustrating. The 49ers try to slide to the weak side, while the DL play / attack the play side shoulder and thus the OL give up the bootleg lane for the QB. No wonder the the 0-tech wins, when the pass rush lane is away from the blocking lane. They often do the same for weak side runs, where they give up the cutback lanes for the RB. This is something 3-4 base defenses seem to be doing more against the Shanahan coaching tree in recent years.
