Chapter 1

“Where is the princess?”

“She is resting in her room,” one of the guards answered.

“Is anyone with her?” An approaching knight continued asking her questions. Her footsteps could be heard pretty loudly in the hall where she was. There were just the two guards protecting the room leading to the princess’ room.

“Um… No, ma’am!” The other guard quickly replied to her.

“How long has she been inside  by herself?”

“Ah. How long would you say it has been?” One of the two guards asked the other, consulting his colleague.

“I’d say half an hour, at most,” he gave his answer.

“And neither  of you thought about going in there and checking on her?” The advancing, stern and cold knight was clearly making them sweat a lot under their armor. This knight was a beautiful woman with granite gray eyes and short jet-black hair. Even though her hair was pretty short, or rather gave the impression of being short, she was actually hiding a surprisingly long ponytail on the inside of the back of the armor. Speaking of which, her armor was incredibly heavy, being covered in thick protective plates. The plates themselves were originally of a dull gray color that was burnished into deep black tones, meaning that the armor used to be a lot paler before and didn’t exactly last for too long. Her armor turned darker and darker with time as she became a stronger knight. This lady knight appreciated her armor and her weapons a lot, taking great pride in the fact that she was evolving among the ranks of the society of storm knights. Concerning her weapons, she wore a long sword in her back and two short daggers on both sides of her hips.

“Um… We didn’t hear anything. She’s fine,” one guard said.

“She’s okay. No need to worry, knight,” the other mentioned.

“No. She’s not. Open the door,” she commanded them.

“...” An awkward moment of silence froze everything.

“What are you two waiting for? Open the door. Open it.”

“We are sorry, but we can’t do that,” one guard told her.

“Well, why can’t you do what I am asking you to?”

“We received different orders from the other storm knights. We need to consult with them first before listening to you.”

“This has to be a joke! Really? They are working against me now?” She waited as she stared at them. They didn’t say a word. They were dead serious. “Alright. So, I need to get out and come back later with a written approval from the other storm knights before being able to enter the princess’ room when I believe she is in danger, huh?”

“That’s right. We received specific orders from the knights.”

“Clear orders from the other knights,” the other guard blurted, agreeing with his partner.

“I see… Then, if this is how it’s going to go. Just let me leave. I have a strong feeling the princess—our princess is in danger right now, but you know what? I am going to turn around. Leave. Spend a couple of hours obtaining that official, written approval, and then, I am going to come back here with everything I need to be able to protect the princess when this is supposed to be your job right now,” the lady knight explained to them what she was going to do at the same time she turned her heels. She then, slowly, began walking away from the door and the two guards. She was leaving for real.

“Alright! See you later!” One of the two guards shouted.

“Well, that was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be.”

“A lot easier than we both thought it was going to be…”

Then, the pair of guards went back to work, which meant in their case, doing absolutely nothing and waiting for time to pass… One and a half minutes passed following her departure…

“Much, much easier than I thought it was going to be to get rid of her…” One of the guards repeated. Visibly glad, she was gone.

“You said it, brother! You said it!” The other guard replied. Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop!

“Do you hear that?” One of the guards asked his buddy.

“Yeah. What is that? It sounds like it’s coming from the other room or something. It’s coming closer and closer too…”

Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! Clip-clop! It was coming much closer. The continuous sound they were hearing sounded like it was getting closer and closer toward them at a fast pace. They didn’t know what to make of it, really.

“It sounds like someone running or something like that… I don’t know. What do you think it is? Should we leave our post or something? I mean, it’s not like we are doing much right now, anyway, huh?” This one guard didn’t want to do much more…

“What are you even saying? Someone running? It doesn’t sound like someone running at all. Someone running in the castle? It can’t be. Why would a God-damned person run in the castle at this time of the night? It doesn’t make any sense, brother,” he called him out on it, yet, it definitely sounded like something was approaching them…

“Hey, look at that…” The other guard pointed out to his colleague—all of a sudden—a horse came dashing toward them. Galloping in their direction. Riding the horse, the same lady storm knight they recently spoke to was staring at them as she unexpectedly came back without any written approval.

“The storm knight! She’s back!” One shouted.

“What the…” This wasn’t supposed to happen.

“I’d move if I were you!” The knight told them.

“Move!” One guard pushed the other at the last second. The two fell over and narrowly escaped being stepped on by the brown and beige mount. The next second, the knight rushed into the door with the horse and opened it in a flash.

The knight was finally inside the princess’ bedroom.

The place was dark. Much darker than the hall where the guards were. It was hard to see, but she was able to figure out pretty quickly that the princess wasn’t in her bed. The knight made a mess of the place as her large horse harshly stomped on every object and furniture in the way.

“Princess! I am Storm Knight, Ciara, and I am here to save you! My horse, Thunder, and I form a team together—we are Beastorm!”
