Backgrounds in my Art - Does it Matter?

TL;DR Version: I'm about to collaborate on a webcomic series on my SFW account with a friend, but to do it I will need to start limiting certain elements in my Bragas account (limiting commissions, ect) and need to know: are detailed backgrounds in my Patreon art a big deal to you, or do you prefer the characters/action of the pic and the background is just unnecessary?

So I'm closing the special poll, I'll be working on Setsuna once I clear out my current work list. Got the 4 character raffle prize and 2 request drawings sketched, will be working on them more tomorrow before work.

Now then I have a serious discussion to bring up with you all. It's something that Killer-WC brought up himself with his and it's now come to mine: Do you care about backgrounds in my art?

Backgrounds tend to be high risk high reward for me. They can be a pain in the ass but really enhance the pic. But at the end of the day as much as you all appreciate my art I know on one level, my art is wank material.

Now, I'm not asking if I should give up backgrounds in my art period. If a Requester/raffle prize winner asks for one I'll draw it, otherwise if they say nothing I'll tend to just do my basic colored shapes technique, and I'll still have backgrounds with my light novel project.

I bring this up because I'm about to embark on a an ambitious, but risky project over on my SFW account with my best friend, can't talk about it yet, but it's a webcomic he's writing and I'm drawing. He's serious about it, but it is very much a "he can pay me when it makes money" situation. While yes this is shitty for me, who's doing 80% of the work for it, I trust him and know he's not bullshitting me about his finances.

So with that I've been taking steps to get my house in order so to speak to focus on this project. The only drastic one is severely limiting the number of commissions I take at a time, as I don't want to scale down the Patreon since you guys take priority. 

This is ultimately why I'm asking. Outside of being specifically asked to draw backgrounds, would my pics half-assing or lacking backgrounds be a deal breaker in my Patreon art for you? Please be honest because I need to make sure I can take on this webcomic project or not without it fucking me over financially or time wise.
